An artistic piece which this paper criticizes is the paintings of a prolific artist known as Leonardo da Vinci. His famous painting is called Mona Lisa that was designed in the 16th century. The art has been brought up in the form of a female human being named Lisa Gherardini. The woman has a pretty smile that has remained anonymous to numerous viewers of modern times. The picture was probably designed with oil, an item that was preferred in paintings of that period.
Descriptive
Da Vinci's picture is captivating to any person who views it. It is enclosed on a 30 by 20.5-inch frame. According to history, the painting was designed a few months before Leonardo passed away. The art portrays an image of a beautiful woman sitting on a chair beside an exclusive scenery that can be easily noticed (Pulkki and Maiju 67). Her mammary glands, façade, open neck, and hands are decorated with similar paints to bring out a distinctive image that is different from the black hair and apparels.
Moreover, the artist used the design of a pyramid to make this art more noticeable. The lighting system on the image has been presented exceptionally with good curves and shapes throughout the portrait (Pulkki and Maiju 67). Nevertheless, the greatest feature in the art is an elusive curvature on the woman’s mouth which seems to communicate something. Many viewers have taken her smile as a sign of cheerfulness while others describe it as a simper. Hence, the smile has remained a mystery to countless people from various parts of the world.
Interpretive
In most cases, onlookers have focused on the smile of Da Vinci’s image. While interpreting this smile, it becomes evident that this woman is blissful because of the beautiful shape of her body or because she thinks that she is superior in peoples’ sight. Furthermore, the smile on the portrait shows how charming this woman used to be in her early ages (Pulkki and Maiju 67). Another prognosis which is grounded on the visual aspect is that the smile of Lisa Gherardini was meant to hide a secret that no one including her husband knew.
The entire painting was attained by a style known as sfumato, a style that presents images minus clear cut-outlines. In sfumato, images were brought out with unique shapes, shadows, and colors to make them appear different distinctive. For instance, the eyes of this image are sharp and they “look” with authority (Pulkki and Maiju 67). Additionally, her arms have been placed across each other to depict the virtue of a real woman in the ancient society. Moreover, the paintings on this woman do not have eyelashes to show how a traditional woman lived a simple lifestyle.
Evaluative
Da Vinci has merited in developing various arts as it has been observed in his famous painting of Mona Lisa. However, some critics put forward that this portray is a real description of his wife. They propose that he used the name of another lady to describe his own woman (Pulkki and Maiju 67). While observing this famous painting that was enabled through incredible multi-skilled efforts of Leonardo, one would acknowledge that it is challenging to appreciate the art unless you view it keenly.
Summarily, any creative work must be described, interpreted, and finally evaluated with much consideration to be understood. Otherwise, people might find a meaning which does not fit the artistic text or an image. Although individuals are still giving meanings to the painting of Mona Lisa, its real definition could be explained vividly by its author.
