There is a lot of tension between the actors and the audience in a drama that tries to reveal the idea of public and private life in marriage as people try making illusions of themselves only to be exposed later (Blum 888). The timeless play is quite symbolic since it reveals several issues in marriage and the danger of failing to resolve them as they occur.
The play is timeless to embrace history as well as the future events in people’s lives. For instance, it presents the marital challenges that face couples now as well as in hundreds of years from now (Michael 3). The drama also portrays similar troubles several years back thus timelessness reveals marital and societal issues in different generations in time. Besides Albee, wants to show that unresolved marital issues can lead to strained relationships and family breakup in the future. Living secretively can have adverse effects in future thus people should open up and reveal their secrets to avoid painful moments in future. George and Martha love each other but over time, they fail to achieve their expectations leading to frequent conflicts. Martha commands her husband “I said, make me a drink (Aibee Act 1 Scene 54). This quote reveals the problems that lead to troubled marriage as time lapses. The play is long and each of the acts is lengthy to build up on the theme of endless family and societal conflicts. The author’s intention is to show the endless problems couples create for themselves always blaming one another for failures. Even after marriage, Martha’s father controls her life revealing that her dad does not understand passage of time that has allowed her daughter to mature.
