Dr. Mohr’s main argument is that surgery is a very important aspect in the medical world as it helps heal people from various ailments. According to Dr. Mohr, the surgical world is very complex and entails many critical aspects. Dr. Mohr explains that surgery dates back to around 10,000 years ago, therefore, there is the need to understand the history and development of surgery to date and even the future. According to history, intervention surgery has been passed down through the generations and there are various crucial aspects which have helped transform surgery (Ted). Modern surgery has been transformed by anesthesia whereby the patients realize relief during surgical operations and also patient mortality has been reduced as a result of focusing on the septic aspect where the instruments, as well as the surgeons, remain sterile.
Improved ideas in the surgical world have helped advance surgery in many ways like the use of brief incisions contrary to the extensive ones used in the past have helped increase the recovery and mortality rates. Dr. Mohr believes that the future of surgery lies in robotic surgery, however, there are limitations to it such as cost whereby it is very expensive to install and operate; it is also cumbersome as it involves calibrations and setting up for different surgeries among others (Ted).
Dr. Mohr’s Strong Claims
Some of Dr. Mohr’s strong claims are that surgery has come a long way from the past whereby surgery had existed for the 10,000 years and that the surgical knowledge has been passed down to generations all over the world till today when we have more advanced techniques and surgical facilities and equipment. Dr. Mohr explains that initially surgery patients underwent a much agony since those times anesthesia was not yet discovered and this is what made the surgeons of that time lose the public’s credibility and trust (Ted). The discovery of anesthesia helped shape the surgical world as the anesthesia provided relief to the patients during surgery, giving the surgeons liberty to operate and experiment. Another strong claim put forward by DR. Mohr is the septic technique whereby the surgeons discovered sterility was crucial in improving patient mortality.
A strong claim by Dr. Mohr is that the discovery of using tools for surgery through small incisions helped improve surgery as the patients were able to quickly recover from surgery. The da Vinci robot had a wrist which improved surgical motions thereby achieving efficiency and accuracy (Ted). Dr. Mohr states that all surgeries cannot be done by the robot due to the high cost involved as well as the technicality involved in setting up the surgical robots. According to Dr. Mohr, there is the need to have improved cameras during surgery to help identify accurate regions that need surgery because at times it is usually difficult to identify such regions since they are below the surface.
Dr. Mohr Conclusions
I agree with Dr. Mohr conclusions that maladies do not care about a person’s status, achievements or plans and anyone can find themselves diagnosed with various ailments such as cancer, heart disease, or organ dysfunction and need to go into surgery (Ted). Concerning this, there is the need to have the option of an easier surgery whereby the surgeons are able to perform surgery relatively fast and efficiently and the patient undergoes minimal agony and realize quick recovery.
The use of advanced tools and robots in surgery will help greatly in identifying the affected regions and facilitate graceful surgery thereby alleviating the individual from his ailment and enabling them to go about their normal duties of saving the world (Ted). Contrary to the past when the methods and tools used in surgery were somewhat crude and making the patient undergo a lot of pain with slim chances of survival, current technological advancement in robotic have helped change this drastically. Current time surgical operations incorporate aspects such as anesthesia, sterility, use of robots which can even be able to facilitate the visual of cells and nerves which help heal the disease as well as ensure the surgery does not damage any other body parts.
Robot Surgery
I would be willing to have surgery performed by a robot because the tools used by the robots during surgery are more refined facilitating high levels of accuracy and overall efficiency. In the current times' robotic surgery, there is a functionality whereby the robot is able to pinpoint the exact regions that require surgery even if they are deeply located in the body. Concerning this, there is minimal or no chance of making an error by snipping the wrong areas which may lead to the patient losing their life. Another aspect that will prompt me to accept having surgery performed by a robot is the minimal area of entry. The incisions done with surgical robots to gain access to various body parts for surgery are small compared to the conventional surgery incisions. The small incisions are advantageous because they will heal fast and I will experience less pain during recovery compared to when the area of surgery is wider.
