The Importance of LGBT Rights in The United States

The talk's main issue is the rights of LGBT people. Wright, the speaker, calls all individuals' equality irrespective of their sexual orientation. As per the speaker, LGBT people continue to face discrimination in various sectors in America (Wright). This is wrong, as it never makes one a second-class citizen by being attracted to the same sex. Through pictures of LGBT people in America, the speaker shows their similarity to other people. In this regard, Wright calls for equal rights among all Americans irrespective of their sexual orientation.

The Evidence the Speaker Uses to Support her Position

The speaker supports her arguments through various pieces of evidence. To begin with, Wright asserts that discrimination is affecting a lot of people in the American society. She offers a variety of examples whereby LGBT people are discriminated against just because of their sexual orientation. For instance, individuals lose jobs while others are disowned due to their sexual orientation. The speaker condemns such cases and calls for equality of all individuals. Further, in accordance with her study, there are a lot of people who are neither straight nor gay but lie in between the two. This makes it difficult for one to group these people as either straight or gay. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the degree of homosexuality of people, thereby making the entire process of classification biased. Finally, the speaker collects a variety of pictures of individuals belonging in the LGBT group and uses them to communicate a lot about their rights. An in-depth analysis of the photographs demonstrates that the LGBT people are happy and similar to the straight people (Wright). In this regard, there is no reason for one to discriminate against these people. Therefore, the speaker concludes by noting that LGBT should be accorded equal rights and treatment.

My Own Point of View on the Issue

In the United States, people believe in the concepts of liberty and justice. America is a secular nation that is characterized by with freedom and opportunity without institutionalized favoritism of any given sex, class, and ethnicity among others. Therefore, it is wrong to treat any individual as a second-class citizen for being gay. In this regard, I support the speaker that LGBT people should have equal rights as other people.

The Defense for My Own Point of View

One of the United States' culture entails protecting individual freedoms and rights with the aim of attaining liberty and justice for all people. Therefore, it would be ideal for everyone to have equal rights irrespective of his/her sexual orientation. This is because the indirect impacts of non-acceptance of the LGBT people in the society hurt everyone. For instance, it affects the growth of young ones and increases suicide rates among teens. Americans should support the rights and equality for LGBT people, as they are one of us irrespective of their beliefs. Most people should be in the forefront to change the manner the society thinks, as the society is an opinion as opposed to a fact. Through the Wright's pictures of LGBT people all over America, it is clear that they are not different from any other American. They are our brothers and sisters with a different sexual belief. These individuals should be accorded the freedom of practicing their sexual belief and be treated equally. Therefore, everyone should develop a positive attitude towards LGBT people and support their attainment of equal rights as they are similar to any other American.
