The Section Focused on Educating Future Leaders


The section focused on educating the future leaders on how they could be more effective in their roles. It is observed that most leaders are using the traditional form in which leadership is about power and authority.


In the past, leaders were the most feared people since they misused their authority for the purpose of creating fear. Most of such leaders believed that through fear, people would respect them. However, the author has pointed to several theories that could help leaders understand how to relate to people better. Also, the author has focused on the different type of models that will ensure future leaders are more concerned about the affairs of the people (Komives and Wagner 78).


The Social Change Model


The social change model is one of the ways in which the leader has used to educate society about leadership. Most people assume that leadership is about being elected to the position of power. Based on how the author has argued those aspects, a leader should be someone who learns how to deal with the people. In that way, different leaders might have different approaches when it comes to relating with the people. The main aim should focus on building a good stable relationship with the people. The model also focused on the social changes that tend not to happen within the community. The leader should focus more on bringing change to that society. In fact, they should compete on the purpose of bringing better change to the society rather than focusing on the power or authority that comes with that position. It is not bad for a leader to have a certain type of power as he/she can use it for the purpose of helping the minority groups. However, the leader should be more aware of the changes that the society is trusting in his or her case.


Emphasizing the Social Change Model


To emphasize more on the social change model, the author used Kolb's model to explain to the student on the activities that would help them to become better leaders in the future. Kolb’s model focuses on the real-life experiences that students could engage. For example, it shows that students should be more involved in the way they relate with others in the classroom. In fact, the same way that such people connect with others will also reflect the type of leaders that they would become in the future. It is the responsibility of the teacher or the instructor to enlighten such students on the better ways of relating with others (Komives and Wagner 120). In that way, the model explains that the students can use their community or the classroom as their lab for conducting that experiment. The students tend to meet many people on a daily basis. In some cases, they might be assigned some roles that they will need to perform. For them to complete those tasks and responsibilities, they will need to engage with other people. The students should take that lesson very seriously for the purpose of helping them become better leaders in the future. Students can also learn by sharing their observations and experiments in class. Such types of sharing of ideas will help other leaders to develop similar types of skills.


The Eight Cs


The author of the book ‘Leadership for a Better World’ tried to educate the reader by showing the interconnection among the eight Cs. The Eight Cs include collaboration, commitment, controversy with civility, the consciousness of self, congruence, common purpose, and change. For any person to be an effective leader, it is very critical to use those eight Cs for the purpose of helping the employees to become better. The success of the leader will depend on how the employees perform their roles. As such, the leader should ensure that he/she motivates the employees for them to perform effectively. The use of those Cs is about guiding the leader in his or her quest of becoming better in the future. Also, the author has explained that leadership is a continuing process. This means that once a leader learns a particular aspect of managing the people, the person should not stop but should try to find more on the areas that will work out better in the future. One of the challenging aspects about a leader is the fact that their roles tend to change in the future, this means that they should also be ready to learn new things for them to be flexible to those types of changes. Leaders should be more than ready to learn new things every day. One of the ways of learning new things is through observation. For example, the leader can observe what other people are doing differently that makes them be successful. It is very important for leaders to learn from others. They should not emulate other leaders but they should select some of the elements that they think would work out best on their case.


Addressing the Meaning of Social Change


The chapters focus on addressing the meaning of social change and how the community understands it. The author wanted the students to understand how different people view that process of change. As such, it will help the leaders to relate more with the issues that are affecting the people. The definition of social change was also supposed to help the students learn new ways of bringing change to the people. The author focused on the idea that the main responsibility of the leader is about bringing change to the people. In a way, the author was educating about servant leadership.


Servant Leadership


Many people have failed to understand the fact that servant leadership is a very important aspect for any leader. It does not mean that the leader is the weakest among the group. It only shows that the leader is willing to work for the people. In that way, it also enlightens the future leader about the type of issues that affect the people. It is not through servant leadership that the leader will understand such issues. Also, the different types of models that the author has used will ensure the future leader understands more about their roles. The author has also posed the question as to why a leader should focus on social change. Many people might be voted into the leadership positions, but they are not aware of the roles that they should conduct to the people. By posing that question, the author wanted the audience to think critically about the ways that they could help society become well in the future. The last part of the chapters focused on how students could connect social change to leadership. As much as the two terms might seem different, they tend to connect in a way. Finally, the author has explained the future changes that are likely to happen within the society and how the leaders could respond to them.
