The Hate Map

The Issue of Equality in a Multiracial Setting

The two videos were informative in their ability to simplify the issue of equality in a multiracial setting, as is the case in America. Both Lysicott and Richen argue for more equality in their videos and even with the differences in their arguments, I found that they both talk about how inequality still exists in a subtle manner in America. In this way, both videos show a clear separation between the country's stance on civil rights and the actual practice of these rights by people in the society.

Similarities to America's Civil History

Another thing that I found interesting in the videos was the similarities that they showed between their standpoints on the issues that they discussed and America's civil history. For instance, Lysicott (2014) noted that her 3 dialects gave her more of an American identity than the use of English alone while Richen (2014) argued that the gay rights movements followed in the same footsteps as the well-known civil rights movement. This fact makes both videos similar since although they discuss different issues, they still show that their views show the inequality that remains even with the country's rich history of civil rights movements.

Hate Groups in California

The Hate Map by SPLC (2018) shows that there are 75 active hate groups in California and many of them are in Los Angeles, which surprises me since I always believed that this state has some of the most tolerant people who do not have outward racial biases. However, this is not the case since there is an almost equal distribution of black and white nationalist groups in the state. The majority of groups involve neo-Nazi and racist skinhead views, with anti-LGBT and anti-Muslim groups also being numerous in the state as well.
