Their sexual orientation and identity usually define people. LGBTs include lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender, who are all considered as "queer" by the community because of their sexual orientations (Naumeier, 2016). This essay focuses on transgender as part of LGBTs, the challenges they face and the ramifications made to address these challenges.
Transgender
The term transgender is usually used to refer to those people whose sense of gender differs from their inherent sexual characteristics. For example, despite having male sex organs, a transgender feels and identifies themselves as a woman. The term transgender was first used by John F. Oliven in 1965 to replace Transsexuals (Naumeier, 2016). Later, it was popularised and by 1970's, it had become an umbrella term that was used to describe various categories of transgender.
Challenges
Most people, who are transgender, encounters several problems. Among the challenges they go through includes insufficient legal protection. They face stigmatisation and harassment from other people, who consider them ill, deviant, or as sexual predators. Thus, this makes them feel uncomfortable, isolated and resentful (Olson, Durwood, DeMeule & McLaughlin, 2015) .Additionally, the transgender faces a severe problem with the collection of the identity documents since they need to be identified as either male or females. Thus, this puts them in a crisis as they do not know how to identify themselves.
Ramifications of the Transgender
There are a few ramifications mandated to deal with this issue. The government has launched campaigns and programs aimed at sensitising people to reduce stigmatisation and harassment they direct to the transgender and the rest of the LGBTs (Naumeier, 2016). Also, the identity documents have been availed in such a way that the transgendered people can express themselves, not as just males and females.
Conclusion
In essence, there are a lot of challenges that the transgender individuals go through. The government and some well-wishers have collaborated in an attempt to ramify such problems. However, a little more actions need to be done to accelerate their ramification.
