There have been many cases of prejudice in our society and around the world. Similarly, there are varied causes and consequences of prejudice. There are many people who have been affected by prejudice across the world. Prejudice mainly arises as result of premature judgment and attitude that people have towards other people because of the race or group they belong to. Prejudice can affect a person's behavior and emotions due to discrimination since the prejudgment is not based on facts but mere beliefs. These beliefs are formed through overall impression and stereotyping believing that all members of a particular group are the same. This paper is intended to introduce the concept of prejudice, state the causes and consequences of prejudice and give a reflection to a conflict fictional situation.
Reflection
I once thought that I am innocent in regard to prejudice until I encountered a personal situational where I stopped seeing even what I know. I was pushed by personal thought to think that I was one of the people encouraging prejudice since I formed a premature opinion about what the black people. After learning this course, I regret my past behavior now that I have to understand how depressed people can feel when subjected to prejudgment. In regard to the case of women on welfare, I think it’s not a good belief to think that those women make babies for us to work to support them. Those women can be our mothers, sisters, and cousins and nobody would like to see people close to them lack basic needs because they are nursing babies.
Strategy 1
The most important strategy to solving prejudice is by educating people especially children on the importance of intergroup relations so that as they grow, they are able to appreciate people from diverse groups, cultures, races, and color (Chesler, Zúñiga " Zuniga, 1991). As the children mature, they would be more conscious and aware of racial and ethical differences.
Strategy 2
The government and other organizations should consider hiring people from different races, groups or ethnicity. Moreover, events that celebrate the traditions of different ethnic groups should be supported. This can go a long way in eliminating the stereotype that others have on people from different certain groups believing that they cannot do well at work when compared to them (Katz " Flynn, 2013). Human rights activists should organize vigils, anti-racism demonstrations, protests and rallies to discourage any form of prejudice or discrimination in the society.
Conclusion
To sum up, it is evident that the idea of prejudice is still prevalent in our societies. As discussed above, there are varied causes and consequences or prejudice which includes premature judgment and stereotyping of people from certain groups, race or ethnic groups. To eradicate prejudice, education on the importance of intergroup relations, anti-racism campaigns and government support are strategies that can be used do away with this conflict.
