The Analysis of The Painting The Hudson River View

Julian Onde4rdonk was the son of San Antonio who was a famous painter. He lived in the year (1822-1922) ("Julian Onderdonk | Questroyal"). He spent his early childhood exploring the South Texas Hill Country. He later went to school at the Art students League. Julian became famous for his Bluebonnet landscapes. One of the paintings was the Hudson river view painting. He is regarded as the best well-known artist texas has ever produced. He tried to describe the Texas view in his paintings. He decided to show his skill with paints and color. The essay below looks at the analysis of Julian Onderdonk's portrayal of the Hudson river view.

Hudson River View painting was created in 1912. It has a scale of 64 Cm against 24 Cm ("Hudson River View 1912 by Julian Onderdonk Giclee Print from Beverly A Mitchell Gallery"). The painting, which places the view of Texas town at the heart of the composition, was painted to highlight the look of the Hudson River. The landscape depicts an unremarkable sketch of that for a city. With tall brown buildings that repeat themselves may be to indicate old buildings and white pieces of clothes that rhyme to suggest that people live in that town. The painting looks simple but represents an elemental treatment of that of a city.  There is a tall circular building that is profiled against the other buildings and the clothes. The painting creates a meditative sense of a slum.

Julian uses the painting style called Impressionism ("Porfirio Salinas"). As suggested by the name Impressionism, it’s when a painting has gestures and illusion. Though the painting looks like real art, it has gestures and illusion. Moreover, when one gets close, one can notice it’s just a series of brushstrokes of many colors. In our case, the painting looks more of a town via the gestures and illusions made. One can tell the presence of buildings, clothes, and the sky. The style has been used by Julian to create an illusion in the audience mind of space and depth.

The painting uses various colors. Colors help art to be more serene, dramatic and glaring. Julian builds several passages of colors in every side of the art. It is easy for one to note the white colors that seem to be hanging on hanging lines. These colors may represent white pieces of clothes that are attached on a hanging rope. One can also note the presence of great brown paintings that seem to have gaps on the side. The brown pictures may be buildings, and the gaps are windows. However, the presence of one tall unique structure that is circular and has a sharp ending captures one`s attention quickly. The building is greycolor. The building is painted in a symbol that represents the temple. The warm and cold colors used at the top of the painting create a sense of atmosphere and space hence one can argue that they represent the sky. Therefore, color is a style that has been used to enhance the painting.

The painting has a strong focal point. The focal point is that place on the painting that communicates the message. It has a different shape and size. It often occupies the largest space of the painting. In the painting the Hudson River View, I think the buildings can be named as the strong focal point. This part explains why the painter was motivated to paint the painting. One can argue that the painter wanted to show the view of that town at that time. Thus, the focal point enables one to derive the message from the painting.

According to Julian, his paintings tried to communicate about his experience in Texas ("Shedding Light on a Landscape Painter’s Lost Years in New York - The New York Times"). Therefore, every painting had a message. Similarly, the painting Hudson River View tries to communicate a certain message. The painting communicates a lot about the living standards that people used to live in that town. One can tell that the living standards were quite low. The city can be said to be more of a slum due to the poor living conditions. The town also looks congested, and one cannot view places like roads. The society living in that town also had a religious belief. The presence of a temple-like building shows that society was religious. The use of warm colors and the presence of clothes in the hanging lines indicates that it was on a warm sunny day. These are some of the messages and illusions that one can draw from the painting.

            Conclusion

I chose the painting because Julian is one of the greatest bluebonnet painters who painted beautiful portraits about the Texas landscape ("Re-examining the Legacy of Early San Antonio Painter Julian Onderdonk | ArtSlut"). One of his fabulous pictures Is the Hudson River View that he painted in 1912. Using his impressionism style, the painting leaves one alluding that that`s the view of Texas town during that time. The picture has used several colors and brushstrokes. It is also easy for one to notice the paintings focal point. The above essay is an analysis of the painting.
