Sociology Career

My line of career is community health worker. The position requires one to have the right educational background and technical skills that will enable one to execute the job in the best way possible. My career dream, is to be a community health worker so I can be in a position to assist vulnerable groups such as children and women. Communicable diseases and sexually transmitted diseases are rampant but can be addressed if correct sensitization is done. I am looking to add on to the current resource available and to ensure that diseases which can be prevented are actually prevented to avoid fatalities. The paper take into consideration the various skills that are acquired I the study of sociology which makes it possible for one to pursue a career in related filed such as community health worker. Communication skills, analytical skills, interpersonal skills, and leadership skills are some of the skills that one acquires as a result of studying sociology. 


Nursing Career


Sociology is a good topic that enables the learners to acquire various skills set that can help them advance their career and also improve on their personal life. Some of the skills that can be acquired through the study of sociology include communication skills, interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and analytical skills (Denny and Earle 8). Leadership skills requires one to be flexible, exhibit tenacity, and ability to follow instructions. By studying sociology, one will learn the value and ability to influence people which is an essence of leadership.  Additionally, through study of sociology, one is able to enhance his/her personal communication skills both in the verbal and in the written form. The ability of one to express himself in a clear, coherent and objective manner makes the targeted audience listen in and make critical observations through such excellent communication.


 In sociology class, the communication skills are sharpened through participating in group discussions witting term papers, and completing reports. Apart from enhanced communication skills, people who have undergone sociology course will also have great interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication is the ability to get along well with others and also to embrace the idea pf tem spirit. The fact that sociology class is very interactive and involves people conducting group discussions and various practicals in the field which helps to shape one’s communication skills. Sociology additionally helps one to understand and embrace other people’s culture. Sociology is often big on the cultures and norms in the society (Denny and Earle 8). The students of sociology are able to acquire and embrace cultural diversity. It teaches one to know that diversity is strength and every culture is just as good as the other. No one should ever think that some cultures are superior to others, with such skills the employee can fit anywhere and be able to blend and still remain in productive within the organization. Embracing cultural diversity is a key requirement in the current job market since the world has become a global village. Team spirit in a cultural diverse background is a commendable because everyone will appreciate each other leading to a cohesive society.  Additionally, it introduces the learners to various social problems in the society. Social problems include child tracking, drug abuse, poverty, and crime. Having a sense of such issues prepares the learners to think of the contributions that they can up with to address the social problems that are being experienced in the society. Being a solution oriented is one step towards making a society a better place. The various skill set that people learn through study of sociology are very important because they are applicable in the work environment. Any employee working in sociology related field should have their communication skills, interpersonal skills, and analytical skills in check.


The three careers that are of interest include community health worker, marriage therapists, and rehabilitation counsellor. Community health worker is required to teach people on behaviors that promotes wellness and health. They are to develop and implement a raft of strategies that will enlace health outcomes for community members. They also need to constantly undertake research to collect data on various health concerns of the society. Such an approach makes it possible to come up with better solutions.  The job attracts a median pay of $45,360 while an entry level qualification is a bachelor’s degree in health education or health promotion (Occupational Outlook Handbook, web).  On the other hand, marriage therapist helps couple and families to manage and overcome various issues and challenges within the household. For one to be qualified to undertake this role, they should be holders of master degree in relevant field. The position attracts a pay of $48,790 (Occupational Outlook Handbook, web). Finally, on the part of the rehabilitation, a counselor, his key duties include helping people to overcome mental, physical, developmental, emotional challenges. To effectively achieve the goal, a rehabilitation counselor should work with clients to understand their needs and draft the best strategies that can be employed to help them overcome their challenges. Thus, the role requires one to have good analytical and interpersonal skills. For one to qualify to hold the position. They are expected to hold master’s degree holders in relevant field. The pay in this job is a median pay of $34860 (Occupational Outlook Handbook, web).


The comparison of various aspects of careers in sociology shows a lot of similarity. For instance, with regard to academic qualification for anyone to qualify for a career in community health worker, marriage therapists, or rehabilitation counsellor they must have pursued a sociology related courses. The need for relevant course is deliberate because it imparts the learners with the relevant skills that will enable them execute their roles.  For instance, analytical skills sis applicable across all the three career areas because it helps the personnel to analyze issues affecting the community and come with proper solution to address the challenges. The median pay is also within the same range which ranges from $34860 to $$48,790 (Occupational Outlook Handbook, web). It shows that the effort being made by the personnel is related and commensurate to the pay that it attracts.


Conclusion


The major skills that were intriguing in the course included analytical and interpersonal skills. I realized that the course is more about the society and knowing how to relate well with the society helps one to identify the unique challenges and solutions to address them. Interpersonal skills helps build the relationship with the society which makes it possible to apply the analytical skills to debunk the society challenges. Sociology has improved my perspective about the society and make me to take a proactive approach to resolve challenges such as health through empowering the community with information on health related issues. I believe that skills and theatrical concepts learnt will benefit me in my future career as a community worker.
