Social Media and Its Impact on Society

In Rey’s article, “Alienation, Exploitation, and Social Media”, he examines capitalism and its adaption to the continuous emergence of sites which take time to create content that is user-generated. He discusses how the social media’s structural conditions relate to the ideas of alienation and exploitation. According to Rey, people who use social media are subjected to certain extents of exploitation that is consistent with industrial capitalism; alienation levels increase with the surge in the usage of social media.

The problem makes it time-intensive, and negative feedbacks cause losses to businesses. Another disadvantage pointed out by the authors is issues related to privacy and security of both company and the customers. From this article, it can be concluded that although social media is beneficial for marketing, it may be the downfall of some businesses if they do not make the right choices.

For these young people, social media ruin their lives instead of bettering them.
