Description of the Artwork
The artwork, which depicts Ave Mary from the older picture Jesus Kind by Allmayer Josephine that was created in 1960, was created in the year 2014. The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon is the principal venue for the portrait at the moment, which is located in McKenzie Gallery.
Christian Europe's Veneration of the Virgin Mary
Since the late Middle Ages, Christian Europe has embraced the veneration of the Virgin Mary in art and popular culture. The art is a colorful icon of the Ave Mary as portrayed earlier in Jesus Kind by Josephine. Moreover, Elena has employed more colors in her work to make the art look beautiful. She has used an innocent brown face and black surf to cover her hair to represent the image of Virgin Mary. In contrast, the background is a solid black and golden shade color. The Representation of the Blessed Virgin Mary brown’s face and hair are accentuated, and the primary rudiments are her face due to innocence and her gaze.
Implied Lines and Symbolism
Elena employs implied lines to direct viewers’ eyes in her artwork. The implied lines have been formed in the background of the art and direct the observers’ eyes to all parts of the lines are moving in all directions. For instance, approaching the center, the lines are converging while diverging as you move further from the center. Also, her hands are lifted up as a sign of holiness. Besides the main icon of Ave Mary, there are some other portraits of women. The red color on one of the woman reflects the viewers’ eyes which drives the impression of seeing what she signifies. Thus, it brings some direction to the left side. The art has been balanced asymmetrically by the view of Ave Mary in the center surrounded every corner by a woman. The light color of the bare space is visually empty thus; it does not have much effect on the darker part of Ave Mary as well as the portraits.
The Use of Shapes in the Artwork
This painting is composed of shapes because it is two-dimensional. Most of the ways are formed by lines and shifts in color. For example, Virgin Mary’s brown face is created by a change from the golden background. Also, the white color on her chest gives a clear view of the positioning of her hands. Therefore, both lines and a shift in color are used together in some places and separate in other areas to create the shapes in the artwork.
Light Source and Colors
Moreover, in Elena’s work, the light source is seen. It has taken the more significant part of the golden section thus; reflecting the darker side. Also, the light source has been evenly distributed throughout the artwork. Therefore, it has made it easier to see the lines and shapes in the icon. On the other hand, Elena’s employment of colors offers Ave Mary a modern look rather than the traditional black and white color used in Jesus Kind that signified innocence and purity (Marian 37). Therefore, through the use of her colors, Elena initiated a symbol of boldness and strength to Christians. They believe that through praying via Virgin Mary, the God hears prayers due to her innocence and purity.
