Racial Oppression in Jessica's Chicano Studies

In the recent years, there has been a notable concern on racial discrimination across the globe. According to Adams & Bell (2016), it is essential for the humans to join hands with human rights advocates to address the detrimental habit of racial oppression. This move is significant in the promotion of national as well as global unity and equity despite the existent of racial differences within the society. Racial oppression is described as the intimidation of particular members of the society due to their racial affiliation especially in circumstances where the racial affiliation of the victimized is perceived as inferior (Blauner, 2013). This task aims to counsel victims of racial oppression particularly Jessica by analyzing her case scenario of racial oppression in her Chicano studies. Advising Jessica on the appropriate course of action to relieve the oppression as well as coping with the situation during her Chicano studies.

Mexican-American Racial Oppression

This task generally intends to tackle racial oppression in the society. The specific idea is to advise Jessica, an American citizen of Mexican origin, who feels oppressed by her classmates who are bilingual and speak Spanish despite the fact that Jessica doesn't understand the Spanish language. Jessica needs to have an appreciation for cultural diversity and try to learn the Spanish language from her friends. This will not only be interesting for her, but it will also provide her with an opportunity to make new Spanish-speaking friends in her Chicano studies. Jessica should also make her friends understand her situation of being unable to comprehend the Spanish language. Thirdly, I would advise Jessica to view the incidence as a challenge to learn the Spanish language rather than oppression.

Advice to Jessica

As a residence hall counselor, I understand that racial oppression within the campus is detrimental and should be abstained; students should feel appreciated and accommodated within the institution. Presence of English speaking students, as well as Spanish speaking students within the institution, may foster racial oppression; however, it is essential to come up with practices students like Jessica should employ to suppress the notion of racial oppression within the institution. First, Jessica should appreciate cultural diversity. Cultural diversity refers to realizing the existence of other people's culture and embracing the culture (Dominelli, 2017). It is worth noting that cultural affiliation synchronizes with racial affiliation, particularly among the Mexicans and Americans. Jessica should try to embrace the nature of the Hispanic students and embrace their Spanish speaking behavior. Jessica should next make her friends understand that constant Spanish speaking behavior is oppressive to her. Thirdly, Jessica needs to change her perception of the situation and learn to be more accommodative to the other students. In this particular case scenario, Jessica should try to make friends with the Hispanic speaking students rather than placing much focus on the perception that she is being sidelined.

The Best course of Action

The best course of action for the general idea of the task is to be able to efficiently eradicate racial oppression. The course of action against racial oppression within the institutions of learning is to first promote embracement of cultural diversity among the students. This action is effective for the student as it will enable her to interact well with the other students without feeling oppressed. According to Freire (2018), students from diverse racial affiliations should foster unity through understanding the circumstances of others and avoid getting into situations which promote oppression. This course of action is effective as it enables sidelined students to feel accommodated within the institution. Lastly, Jessica should be encouraged to befriend the Hispanic speaking students. This will help in challenging her to learn Spanish. Further, making friendship ties with the Hispanic speaking students will make her feel more appreciated by the other students despite her inability to speak in Spanish.

Conclusion

In conclusion, racial oppression is a detrimental habit in the society as it fosters social inferiority among members of the society. The task extensively provides measures to curb racial oppression within the institutional setup particularly among Hispanic speaking students and the English speaking students. It is essential for students to have cultural diversity, mutual understanding, and friendship ties in order to suppress racial oppression within institutions.
