Power Disparity in Organizations

When compared to other units in the military, Navy SEALs have more power. Power disparities are exacerbated by factors such as unity, knowledge, role, and influence. Navy SEALs are well-known for doing delicate operations such as eliminating terrorists from the country. When compared to the rest of the forces, their extensive training and knowledge development provide them with superior skills. The SEALs are a cohesive bunch. They look out for one another and pool their resources to lobby the government to meet their requirements. Due to the unity, the influence exerted by the team is high (Losh, 2011). None of the members likes going against the group. As much as the role of the military is the same in all the departments, the additional training and skills make them more powerful in the service.


Perception of Disparity


The disparity of power the team is evident to most people. The power is visible through the conformity displayed by members of the team. Members of the SEAL do not require enforcement or surveillance to follow the rules. The members conform to the standards of the team voluntarily. The unity in the group that enforces the power of the people is visible to both the members of the team as well as those of other departments. The missions completed by the Navy SEALs improve the unity of the team. Therefore, the team is responsible for the power of the group. The members of the team present a united front when facing any challenge. All the members follow the rules of the team making it evidently stronger than other groups. Therefore, the power is very evident for all people to see.


Ways of Minimizing Disparity


When power disparity rocks an organization, the teams develop unnecessary competition in fighting for dominance. As much as both sides work for the good of the whole organization, the competition is not healthy. Managers have a role of ensuring there is no power disparity within the group by providing all teams with equal opportunities to increase their knowledge. One of the factors that lead to power disparity is differences for skills possessed by the various departments in the organization. Therefore, the manager should present all the people with the same opportunities to improve their skills. A neutral manager communicates the importance of all departments without giving any department a higher power. Neutrality requires all the units to possess similar powers especially in circumstances where the departments perform the same duties for the organization (Losh, 2011).


Managers should foster unity for all departments to present a united front.


The Navy SEALs perform their duties in a collective and unified manner. The unity increases their power making the unit stronger than the rest. Therefore, the managers should eliminate any aspects that cause disunity in the teams and reduce the power. More so, the managers need to ensure high motivation within the groups to minimize the need for surveillance for the people to perform their duties. Managers should ensure conformity within the respective departments through ample communication to ensure improved power for all departments. The manager bears the sole responsibility of providing the units with equal opportunities in improving their skills to reduce power disparity and motivate the employees into better performances. Such changes will reduce the unnecessary competition as well as the perception of variation within the organization.
