As the internet took off, information became more easily available. According to Kensing (11), the customer Health Informatics (CHI) movement had its start at a time when emphasizing customer involvement in healthcare services was a priority. As a result, there can be a problem with misinformation. Therefore, a legitimate system for accessing health information was required. The previously prioritized Electronic Health Records system was successfully integrated. This emphasis has increased significantly, leading stakeholders to collaborate with information technology experts to develop solutions that can meet these objectives. This will go a long way toward empowering consumers to protect their own health and the health of those around them. There are two models of Personal Health Records. The first as indicated by Hoyt &Yoshihashi (215)known as the stand alone model, where the patient fills it on their own personal computers while the tethered model is linked to a healthcare facility. These models are facilitated by applications and depending on which one, they present varying challenges. Barriers point toward either the clinician, consumer or system. Privacy being a main concern among consumers afraid of cyber-attack and limitations to access due to difficulties in navigation in the platforms or unreliable internet connectivity increases chances of poor adoption of the CHI.There are also knowledge gaps and literacy levels especially where complex medical terms are used. This may cause lack of understanding and misinterpretation of information by consumer without prior medical knowledge. The older adults in the population might suffer most of the challenges unless support and assistance is offered to them. Some physical and cognitive disabilities, pose different challenges that will need to be addressed in order for this disadvantaged can enjoy access to the CHI as well.
