Payment for Student Athletes

College athletics is becoming more prominent and its members and players gaining the professional status. However, despite the fame and the big wins money is one big issue that surrounds college athletics. The National College Athletic Association (NCAA) is the governing body responsible for regulation of athletes in universities, colleges and other institutions in Canada and the United States. The NCAA makes billion each year from the student athletes but fail to compensate their athletes. Grenardot (159) posits that the top management officials and the coaches earn exorbitant salaries and bonuses from the profits they make.  Conversely, the athletes do not receive any form of compensation from their efforts and some state they sometimes go hungry despite the fact that they win games and have pressure to play to their best capabilities (Grenardot, 160).  Additionally, there are beliefs’ that the scholarships students athletes receive is payment enough while the schools states that they cannot afford to pay the players. The athletes have the right to receive proper compensation form their efforts since the value they create for the schools and the NCAA is immeasurable. The NCAA should ensure that their athletes are well motivated on top of the scholarships they collect. The NCAA and the athletes should figure out a well thought out payment systems that will ensure both parties are content and no one feels less valuable. This paper will therefore provide a proposal for the payment model that will ensure the athletes receive a fair compensation for their efforts and avoid exploitation.

Jeffery Dorfman argues that student athletes should not receive any form of payments since they have enough compensation already. He asserts that the students get free meal plans, tuition, rooms and stipends for other expenses. Caruso says that the athletes get free fame and publicity which is more compensation than they would ever need. On the other hand, Parent believes that student athletes should concentrate on being students and forget about the payments since they are in school to learn and not earn many from extracurricular activities. Grenardot (161) argues that student athletes deserve these payments because of the efforts they put in the games. He also adds that the students expose themselves to life threatening injuries and excessive physical activities they may alter their lives forever. He also adds that other students for example those who play music still earn from the off campus events including performances organized by the universities. The student’s athletes are not different from the music students in the universities.

The responsibility to pay the student athletes should not rely on the schools alone. The NCAA has to be part and parcel of the payment programs. If they can afford to pay their management team seven figure salaries, there is enough to pay students if there is a reduction in the salaries o the managers and the coaches. A cap in the current compensation structure of the coaches, directors and top level management is a suitable pitch that will ensure proper compensation for all including the student athletes.  A salary cap refers to the regulations and limits on the amount of compensation an athlete can receive from a team. Since there are concerns that students do not really need payments but enough stipends to make their lives more comfortable, salary caps will work well to ensure that they lice according to their means.

Paying student athletes based on their performance will only mean that there are students who will receive more money than others making it a business. Performance based compensation will only make good athletes loose interest in academics and instead focus on the sorts. A salary cap will ensure that there is equal talent distribution as well as create a balance in the competitive level of the team.  Equality will still guarantee that even the not only the best performing student athletes get paid but all students who play in the school teams receive compensation for their efforts.

Grenardo also states that most schools, colleges and institutions claim that they do not have the means to pay the student athletes. Yet statistics conform they make a lot of money that the can afford to ay high salaries for their managers and directors. Nocera states that the institutions should outline a minimum of $25.000 for its players. This kind of compensation will not make the students rich yet it will make them live a little bit comfortable to avoid instances of sleepi College athletics is becoming more prominent and its members and players gaining the professional status. The salary cap will also work closely with the duke model that Grenardo proposes. A salary cap ensures that the institutions have extra money they receive since they already have a clearly defined budget on the amount each player should receive (Nocera.) The coaches and directors of the NCAA should also have a salary cap on their compensations to ensure that there is enough money left for the students. The Duke model believes in the reallocation of salaries from the coaches to the player's compensations ( Grenardo, 198). Grenardo also argues that the money that the NCAA receives form conferences and other revenue-generating activities should be used to ensures that athletes receive proper remuneration. A salary cap will ensure that the NCAA has enough money saved for the player’s compensation. The coaches receive higher compensation since they do not have limitations on the amount of money they should receive.this is why they take home huge salaries and it does not look like exploitation of an offense.  A salary cap on their recompenses will ensure that those funds will be reallocated for better use other than just pay salaries. According to Nocera, the national College Player Association should be on the forefront in pushing for negotiations for the student’s athletes with the power 5 and the NCAA for student’s payments.

In conclusion, it is quite imperative that the NCAA should have a sit down with the players and negotiate terms of their payments.  The students devote a lot of time in their game practice as well as educational goals. Most of the students who receive scholarships constitute approximately 1 % of the athletes (Watt and Moore). This means that they do not only focus on the sports but also ensure that they have acceptable schools records and scores that ensures they also bag the best scholarships. Juggling between academic demands and those of the coaches is not an easy task. It is only fair that student’s athletes get the right compensation for their efforts. A salary cap will not only ensure talent distribution but also help student-athletes live a comfortable life in schools.
