Parenting of school-aged children

In this case, I will discuss on school-aged children. Children are commonly known to break the rules to test the authority. In this way, they understand what behavior is correct and what is not.  Most parents try to find ways to deal with these issues. As much as the society opts for medication, they have also found other ways to deal with the behaviors. So the community does not heavily rely on medication to deal with the issues in children. The most common misconduct include;

Backtalk and disrespect

When children shout back at their parents, more so when they are told to do something, can lead to an argument. If these happen, parents should ignore backtalk if the behavior is not alarming so long as the children follow instructions and then explain to them that it is okay to be angry but not okay to speak irrespectively. Parents should be alarmed when their children's responses are threatening self or others and handle it cautiously. Guardians should not respond spontaneously, but they should wait for the children to calm down and talk about what they said.  Parents should set limits and let the children be aware of the consequences. Also, parents should examine their behaviors and lead as an example.

Abusive language

Parents and guardian should be cautious when children start using abusive language, yelling and swearing using offensive language. First parents should lead as an example; they should not use foul language in the presence of kids. They should not tolerate verbal abuse at home. They should make it known to children the consequences and be strict to it. Correct the children immediately they use abusive words.  Apologize directly to the kids if they use inappropriate words in front of the children.

Aggressive or violent behavior

Conduct disorders, mood disorders, psychosis, trauma, frustration, and impulsiveness can cause aggressiveness to children. In most cases, children sort in violence for self-defense. Environment and peer pressure can lead to aggression also. Parents should not yell at their children when they are aggressive but lower their tone and tell them to calm down. Make it clear to children that kicking and biting is not good. Remind them of the consequences if they turn violent. Teach them to talk out when they are angry instead of opting for physical violence. They should be role models for the children and reward positive and ethical behavior.

Lying

Children lie sometimes, and parents get worried when their kids lie. They feel hurt betrayed and have trust issues with the child. But parents are advised not to take the matter personally but try to understand what made the child lie. Parents should appreciate the positives to encourage children not to lie. They should teach them to be honest and be their best examples.

Bullying

Bullying can lead to physical and emotional abuse of the victim. The reason why children bully others is to feel powerful and resolve their social problem. Right from the young age, parents should teach their children that bullying is wrong and show them what bullying is and even give.

Screaming

When children scream, parents should not yell back at them since it reiterates that it is okay to cry, teach them to whisper or talk calmly through a game and admit their feelings and talk to them.

Running away

Running away is very dangerous especially in public places like roads. Parents should keep their children's movements, show them where they can run and where they cannot.

 Pulling hair

Children pull hair to fix bad things; parents should explain to them that it not a good idea and it does not set things. They should interrupt them when they are pulling the hair.

Manipulation

Manipulation can be hard to handle; children use every means to get what they want like crying and lying. Parents should not fall for their children's manipulative behavior. Guardians should expect children to cause trouble when they say no, in this way they can figure out ways how to handle their behavior. Make it known to them that no means no and avoid discussion but don't ignore them altogether.

Being lazy and lack of motivation

If children lose the interest of doing things at all, then it's hard for the parents to motivate them.  Parents should not get anxious about their children's behavior. Parents should inspire them by sharing experience and telling them stories. They should not force children to take a hobby (Gongala, 2017).

Behavior problems in college

When kids refuse to go to school or don't complete their homework in time, they give parents stress. Parents should try to understand why the children are behaving this way. Parents should not instead offer bribes they should provide incentives to encourage them.

As much parents try to solve issues at home, it reaches a time these behaviors exceed limits and causes alarm. Parent's sort medication at this stage. Some examples of this help include visiting a pediatrician, child psychologist, child psychiatrist,  the specialist children services, the Resource Centre for Child and Safety, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Association of Victoria and Association children with disability.  These are the abnormal behaviors that parents look out for to seek medication (Wolraich, 1997).

Oppositional defiant disorder

This practice is troublesome that affects children commonly. Children tend to have low self-esteem, throws tantrums. Gets angry and outbursts often. They also annoy others intentionally and blame others for the offenses.

Conduct disorder

Children with this disorder do not obey rules, they are absentees, they try to abuse drugs, aggressive towards pets and animals, always ready to fight, children lie regularly, have suicidal thoughts, and they involve in crimes like burglary and have tendencies of running away from home.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Kids with this disorder are always disoriented when spoken to; they have difficulty issues in remembering things, they have trouble in focusing and inattention to details.

Learning disability

This disorder tampers with the children's academic performance and needs individual teachers to help. Children are unable to grasp instructions; they tend to have a short-term memory and poor communication abilities.

Anti-social personality disorder

Children tend to become unresponsive to others problem. This disease may intensify later in life leading to unethical and illegal activities of an individual (Henderson, 2016).

Underdeveloped social skills

This disorder result into social interaction weakening.  Children have difficulties in starting a conversation in public and casual relations.

In conclusion, yes society relies on medication for children's behavior but not mainly as there are many other ways to deal with behavior issues in children as seen above.
