Opposing Viewpoints: GMO-Related Biotechnology

Return to the key points that you wrote out in your Writing Plan from Module 3 (Attached). If you have changed your mind about one of your key points, update and save that information now. Choose one of these points you want to strengthen using the research you've already conducted in the Opposing Viewpoints database and online (remember, one and only one of your sources may come from a website you found outside of the database), then follow the prompts below to practice integration. We'll be using the PIE method of source integration for guidance, so feel free to look back over that material.

PIE method

At times it can be difficult to know what information from your sources to include in your paper. The PIE method can help you make decisions about how to structure your writing to make sure you are providing enough evidence at the appropriate times. The following graphic describes the PIE method of paragraph formatting.

The P is for point. The first thing you should do in a paragraph is clearly state the point you will be making. This point should be clearly related to your overall project. The I is for information. Next, provide information or evidence that supports that point. This is where you will cite sources using a combination of quotations and summaries. The E is for explanation. Finally, make it clear why the information provided supports the points you introduced at the start of the paragraph. You should not assume your audience will understand why the information presented is supportive of your points without adequate explanation.

Walking Through the Integration Process

Type your responses

1. Review your sources and select a source that will support a key point in your essay.

Burachik, Moisés. “Experience from use of GMOs in Argentinian agriculture, economy and environment.” New biotechnology, vol. 27, no. 5, 2010, pp. 588-592.

2. In 1-2 sentences, clearly state what the point is that you are trying to make in this particular section of your project.

GMO-related biotechnology creates thousands of well-paying jobs since its R&D began in the 1970s. This is accompanied by intensive GMO farming that requires the recruitment of thousands of people for the crop production.

3. What information from the source you selected in step 1 supports this point? You may quote or summarize that source below.

“The release of GTS has contributed to the creation of almost a million jobs (whole economy-wide), representing 36% of the total increase in employment over the 1996–2006 period” (Burachik 589).

4. Explain how the information provided in question three supports your point. How does this information also support the overall argument in your essay?

The information from the sources suggests that by planting over thousands of acres of glyphosate- tolerant soybean (GTS), millions of job opportunities have been created which result in the increase in employment rates. This supports the key argument that GMO production as well as the technology itself increases employment opportunities. With many productive farms as well as increased technology-related functions such as genetic engineering and testing, more people would be recruited to enhance the GMO intervention processes.
