The ability for self-evaluation is an essential aspect of life. Understanding and appreciating the strengths, weaknesses, values, and interests helps in not only the personal growth but also other areas, such as academic and professional success. The positive aspects help us understand our abilities and strengths, and prevent us from limiting ourselves, while the negative aspects become a learning opportunity to help us work and improve ourselves, while limiting their effect on our performance. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate and document some of the values, characters, weaknesses, and strengths that I possess to have a self-examination, and find out how to best utilize the positive aspects and improve on the negatives about the career path I intend. It also serves in the effort to chart a way forward on the acquisition of additional skills, knowledge, and abilities to leverage the career choice intended.
One of my major strengths and motivations is having a great ambition. Having a strong belief in myself and setting high standards of achievement have provided a significant boost in all aspects of life, both personal and academic. The need to achieve my goals has motivated pursuance of business courses due to the many opportunities available, and the presence of opportunities to grow both in person and in the workplace. The corporate world provides many opportunities for ambitious people, which gives a sound basis for pursuing such a course.
The ability to be organized is also a positive value. Organization under different circumstances helps in instances, which require methodical and systematic approach. This quality comes into play in cases, when there are competing priorities, and a decision has to be made. The ability to organize helps when there is a need to evaluate and create preferences allowing for a systematic approach to issues. It is a necessity in the corporate world with the need for organizing against competing priorities.
Furthermore, the ability to be multi-interested gives me an opportunity not only to pursue different goals while giving due priority to each, but to also navigate through different aspects while maintaining focus. Most situations in life require juggling on multiple items without losing track of either. The ability to be interested in several things also increases the number of skill-sets, which is a definite boost in the personal value.
However, I tend to procrastinate from time to time. It runs the risk of degenerating into complacency that may affect future engagements and projects. The business world is strict on time, and time management is a critical aspect. Though procrastination does not reduce the value of work, it puts me under pressure due to time constraints. There is, therefore, the need to improve on time management for smooth working.
Impatience when dealing with other individuals and in situations of high stress also undermines the individual capabilities. Even though, at times, this may increase productivity in team members or colleagues, it creates undue tension and tends to water down the quality of results or relationships. There is, therefore, the need to learn and master the balance and increased virtue of patience.
There is a need for further evaluation and improvements in all these aspects, as well as new learning. I intend to utilize my colleagues in providing feedback about me in a bid to continue with the evaluation, and find ways of fostering even better values and qualities. I also intend to receive coaching, especially on leadership and relations to improve myself. Furthermore, finding a mentor in the same field will provide an excellent opportunity for insight into all the aspects by someone, who has already been there. I will, therefore, be better groomed to handle myself when I get there, and also leverage on my strengths and weaknesses.
