My Passion for Fashion

I strongly believe that fashion is an art which can be interpreted in so many ways. It’s not a surprise that every individual has their own definition of fashion and style, with some people believing that expressing oneself is difficult. It fascinates me that those people choose to express their personality and beliefs through fashion. I have had great interest in the fashion world for a long time and I have developed different ways to express myself through various styles. I am particularly intrigued by John Bates, a 1970s fashion designer, who has greatly influenced modern fashion. His diverse styles of designing women fashion such as mini-skirts and trousers in the late 60s is the reason I look up to him from a feminist’s perspective. I am very interested in the cultures that influenced his work. I am also inspired by the works of Elsa Schiaparelli, an Italian female fashion designer renowned for pioneering jettisoned corset and designing woman clothing that enabled freedom of movement. I take inspiration from her career story, her business having collapsed on different occasions but forged on tougher and stronger.

My interest in fashion design drives me to learn new things every day. I am determined to improve my knowledge and technical skills I already possess then combine them with my knowledge in marketing and merchandising. Fashion has shaped me as a person. I have learned to express my personality through different fashion styles. I have also become the best version of myself because fashion enables me to be in touch with who I really am. I am curious to dive into the fashion world and leave a long-lasting legacy, just like the glamorous John Bates, after I am gone. His designs and styles motivated me to draw my first sketchbook with an intention to enhance my career in fashion. My sketchbook was inspired by Michael Beirut’s Partner Pentagram. It is a 7 ¼ by 9 ¾ inch school book which I carry around everywhere I go. I love browsing through the famous designers’ sketchbooks because it gives me an extra perception of the world as it is.

My profound interest in ‘anything fashion’ and my love for designing new fashion have shaped my creativity and I strongly believe that I am a perfect candidate to take on. Through school, I have learned that it is important to maintain attendance and to pay attention during my A levels.

I speak five languages; English, French, Spanish, Italian and German. My mastery of these languages gives me an exceptional chance to communicate with many people and to express myself without difficulty. I have also gained an insight to many cultures by speaking their languages and interacting with them, which has helped me build my confidence. During my university studies, I have gained additional knowledge in other disciplines such as sociology and psychology. It is important to understand people’s culture so as to create a brand/label that does not seem too aggressive or biased. In addition to my current course, I have applied to other universities to study fashion design courses, especially graphic design, and illustration and drawing. I have gained academic skills such as essay writing, report writing, researching and revising. I believe that these skills are required for a successful career in fashion design.
