Over the years, the society has witnessed diminishing opportunities for the male population in diverse spheres of lives. On the contrary, the females have enjoyed sporadic improvements in their social and economic status. While there appears to be a sharp divide on specific courses for deteriorating number of opportunities for the men, this paper holds to the view that masculinity is under attack. Some of the areas where men face inequality in regards to access include education, health, and ultimately the job market.
Education
Most opportunities are reserved for women leaving men to compete for the little spaces available. Besides, the paper also found out most scholarship opportunities favors women. Similarly, in regards to health, most studies funded by the government aim on understanding the medical and social issues affecting women, leaving out men. The result is the emergence of social and medical problems affecting men that few academic circles can comprehend. Consequently, leading to lower life expectancy for men and overall deterioration of their health. Men also face inequalities in the job market especially when it comes to pay and promotion opportunities. Therefore, by analyzing the above factors, it is evident that the masculinity is under attack.
Introduction
The Feminist movement's primary goal was to end stereotypes and open more opportunities for women. While the movement achieved many gains in empowering the women and diminishing the negative stereotypes meted on the girl child, it delivered exactly the opposite for males and accelerated the anti-men sentiment (Social Justice Fails). This paper aims to illuminate how the society sidelines men throughout the significant sectors of the economy such as education and job market leading to devastating effects on the male population. Therefore, indicating that masculinity is under considerable attack and something must be done before it is too late.
Education
First, in education, women enrollment in graduate schools has tremendously increased in the recent past compared to men. In fact, the number of females enrolled in lucrative courses surpasses their male counterparts. For a point, it does not mean that males are becoming lazy or academically redundant but because there are few opportunities for men to compete over (Conservative network). Besides, most or all affirmative actions are geared towards sensitizing women and making them economically active. For instance, the entry level grades for females is much lower compared to that of men. The result is more women getting enrolled to further their education compared to men.
Besides, many scholarship programs aiming towards helping girls and women. Now the question is who will help the boy child. Moreover, various institutions operate fully fledged women departments that seek to socially and economically empower women. However, that is not the case. In fact, most of those sessions work to demonize the male population, thus making them look like lesser beings. On the other hand, no institution has established any unit or department to cater or fight for male right. Begging the question whether men are that good not require any help. However, critics are of the view the male population are becoming lazier with each new dawn, and that their weakness in school is out of their own volition.
Health
Second, the continuous demonization and neglect of males have led to declining health standards for men. The average American man dies five years earlier than their women counterparts. What policymakers should try and investigate is why the scenario. A reasonable explanation stems from the years of neglect, and social disenfranchisement of the male community leads them to various forms of dangerous addictions that negatively affect their lives in the long run. Since all the organizations focus their efforts on only helping females, nobody notices the challenges the men pass through till it is too late (Conservative network). Male sufferings mostly are seen as a choice rather than a problem worth tackling. More worryingly, no federal funded study aiming at understanding the challenges men go through. Even with the little income men receive, the society expects them to shoulder most of the needs of the family.
Consequently, increasing the stress levels of men leaving them unable to look after themselves. Recent studies reveal that more and more young men are falling into obesity compared to females. The best possible explanation is because of the increased stress levels of men, therefore making them unable to become physically active (Conservative network). Moreover, men have more financial responsibilities compared to women who earn more income. As a result, men's disposable income significantly reduces hence unable to afford basic fitness and beauty programs like a gym or cosmetic surgery. Notwithstanding, men have to work for long hours to earn a reasonable income, therefore, less time spent on leisure or fitness activities. Though, critics view that matters of health are personal and that failure by men to keep healthy and fit is a personal decision.
Job Market
Lastly, the job market skews in favor of women. First, the number of females absorbed in the job market is more compared to men. Various affirmative actions adopted favor women in particular, leaving out more able men out of employment. At times the unemployed men can be more productive than women. The situation is further compounded by a decline in manufacturing jobs that predominantly hired men (Conservative network). As a consequence, more men are left out of the job market with no incomes, a requisite for criminal activities and drug addictions. Next, in the recent years, the hourly wages for men have drastically fallen while those for women increased or remained stable. Thus, more women becoming more financially stable than men.
The result, more divorce cases where the man is sent out of the house but has to divide part of his meager salary for child support to a woman who earns more than him. Surprisingly, a recent survey indicates women are becoming financially stable at a young age of 22 compared to men who can stay with their parents up to later years due to massive unemployment facing them (Conservative network). Thirdly, when it comes to promotions at work women are more favored, begging the question who shall save the men of this world. Conversely, some are of the view that women climb the corporate ladders through sheer sweat and determination and challenge men to emulate their women counterpart.
Conclusion
In summary, the affirmative action long adopted to empower women have outlived the purpose and what now it does is to cause havoc and misery to the male population. It is high time for the policymakers to get back to the drawing board and see how to best help both males and females with jeopardizing each gender. The world would be nothing without each of the sexes.
