Investment in Learning: The Individual and Social Value of American Higher Education

Bowen, Howard. Investment in learning: The individual and social value of American higher education. Routledge, 2018.

In Investment in Learning, Bowen analyses the topic from the economic perspective and accountability of the fee paid by the student. In his postulation, it is attributed that most of the students pay the fee but do not get the chance to visit the library during its normal operating hours not because it is out of bound but because they do not have enough time during the day. Using an example, Bowen states that a student who is working and learning at the same time may not have time to visit the library since they are always out working during the day. Such students depend on their free time in the evening or at night to concentrate on their college work. Availability of library services throughout the night will allow them to balance in between their busy schedule and to have adequate time to visit the library if necessary.

The information portrayed by the author can be perceived to be true. The author commenced his articulation by first a case scenario of a college student who has to balance between schooling and employment. The use of citations in the articulation is an added proof of the information hence can be considered to be viable.

Investment in learning is relevant to the study since it provides an insightful advantage of the 24-hour study to those who are unable to attend the school normally. International students have been on the rise, and due to the time difference, on some occasions, they don’t manage to go through the same visual classes with other because of their schedule or availability of needed resources. The 24-hour library system can otherwise help address the issue of unavailability of resources. With the ability to access the library both in the day and at night, the students can obtain the required resource at the right time especially when attending visual or online lases through video

Bryson, Jo. Effective library and information centre management. Routledge, 2017

According to Bryson, the college provides a difficult time beside the midterms and the final exams. The stress that is put on the students by multiple assignments cannot be understated. Though the extension of library hours can be considered as a waste of time and resources and money that could otherwise be used somewhere on college, it is significant to prioritize the needs of the student. The author makes it clear that availing the libraries all the time is one of the ways of prioritizing the students since it is their property and their accessibility need not be regulated.

The information portrayed in the publication cannot be authenticated. Though it provides a detailed evaluation of the importance of a 24-hour library through focusing mainly on the students’ welfare, the basis of the argument is not in relation to any fact. Concerning the operations of libraries twenty-four hours every day, the authors in their articulation attribute that though there are numerous advantages of the system, it poses disadvantages that need to be highlighted.
