Galileo's Refutation to Ptolemy's Solar System

Ptolemaic solar system

Ptolemaic solar system proposes that the earth is at the center then surrounded by planets, moon, and stars among other celestial bodies. He added that the earth does not move at all neither are other celestial bodies. Carpanicus held that the sun is surrounded by other planets and the moon surrounds the earth. Scientists have come up to prove that the sun is not at the center of the earth and moves which is contrary to the thoughts of Carpanicus.

Galileo refutes the Ptolemaic solar system

Galileo raised many arguments to refute this assertion by Ptolemy that the earth is at the center and Carpanicus' argument that the sun is at the center. Galileo stated that the assertions by Ptolemy and Aristotle are fallacious and contradict religion. He came up with several discoveries that prove wrong the hypothesis raised by Ptolemy, Aristotle and other philosophers that the earth is centered. He stated that their arguments go against the Bible and the religious facts. Ptolemy and other philosophers respond shallowly to arguments about the refute of their hypothesis (Galileo 176).

Galileo's criticism of Ptolemy's theory

Galileo proves wrong Ptolemy's theory and said that he did not understand the Bible. He said that a person may oppress another person and receive encouragement from others. The fact remains that human in nature can sin and be applauded by others. Some of the people who commit injuries to other are people who preach in the pulpits and are very bold when preaching about these issues. Their hypocritical mind tells them that what they are doing is right little do they know that they will be punished by the supreme authority who is God. All the astronomical statements will not only be suppressed but will be condemned. The astronomical statements include the Ptolemaic solar system and the Copernican solar system.

Copernicus and the sun-centered argument

Copernicus did not base most of his arguments on religious writings according to Galileo. Most of his arguments are based on physical objects such as the celestial motion. He dealt with astronomical arguments and represented his arguments geometrically. Observation and demonstrations were the main platforms that Copernicus laid most of his arguments. He did not disapprove or ignored the Bible but believed that when his arguments were proven, they will not contradict what is written in the scriptures. Copernicus defended his argument by saying that he wrote the sun-centered argument to help the holy church in making decisions. Several philosophers have used the Bible to oppose the arguments that the earth revolves around the sun which does not move. The religious people have stated that the sun moves while the earth stands still. They regard the sun-centered theory as a contradictory to the Bible. Galileo states that the Bible cannot state something untrue when it is understood and hence the proves of Copernicus are fallacious (Galileo 174).

God's affection for human beings

Galileo says that God has affection for the human beings and accommodate people of different capacities both good and bad. God engages in the human affairs and cares for everyone whether sinner of good. During the Renaissance period, people were filled with rage, malice and committed acts that did not please God. God did not stop caring for them but took them as his own. The Bible did not intend to teach people about the heavenly bodies but focused on the faith that establishes a strong relationship with God.
