There is a lot of healthcare than what meets the eyes and business management side is one of the many aspects. BS in Health Administration with a specialization in Emergency Management (BSHA/EM) was a good starting point for me given that I am more interested in EM or first emergency respondents and in furthering my skills in delivering the best health care services.
BSHA program has helped me gain a basic understanding of business management used in healthcare organizations while taking courses in managing and organizing emergency response actions. Moreover, the program emphasized the acquisition of analytical and conceptual skills essential in running and managing of modern healthcare organizations. The most insightful part was the understanding I gained from the structure and inner working of these establishments such as the implementation of successful managerial approaches and skills required when working in teams and expedite collaborative decision-making process. The program gave me more insight into the field of healthcare, and I felt the content was to some extent well arranged.
My role in the healthcare industry as a holder of BSHA degree ranges from staff and facility management, medical data management to the emergency services provider. As a health care provider, I will ensure efficient workplace productivity, management of patient records and computer systems. Places of work may include nursing homes, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and out-patient/in- patient facilities. The type of services I may provide is clinical, health information, management, as well as emergency responding services.
Considering all the courses and content I have mastered, I like management course preferably the emergency management classes. Having emergency management as a specialization, I will be prepared to tackle any emergency especially when I get an opportunity to work with health organizations like FEMA and Los Angeles emergency operations, FDA, and various emergency room services. The course content I gained while taking the class will act as a pivot in executing my future role more effectively.
The knowledge I have gained while undertaking the program will be vital to the role I aspire to obtain in the health industry given that am more thrilled by emergency management. I will put the knowledge into practice by apply interpersonal skills that will allow me to work with other people, inspiring and motivating them as I promote collaborated projects. By using relational skills, I will facilitate effective communication and be part of a team. Information management will help in collecting and disseminating information that will be needed in carrying out emergency response services. My analytical skills will contribute to planning and analyze data required as well as incorporating technology by using equipment, processes, and machinery in performing tasks of the position I will be holding. Additionally, I will use action skills in directing and instigating actions by setting goals, using available resources, and making decisions in uncertain conditions as per the role I will obtain.
I wish there would have been classes on hospital setting /ER in my course to provide practical experience that I would list on my resume. Though I had previously volunteered in the emergency room of American Red Cross, experimenting while taking a management course, especially EM classes would have been better. Moreso, instructors, should have included videos to teach real-life situations that were likely to be encountered in my future career in Emergency Management.
