Anish named the monument ‘The Cloud Gate’

Because of its similarity to the skyline, Anish called the monument "The Cloud Doors." The artist was fascinated by liquid mercury and a need to investigate form and shape, so he attempted to sculpt something with an entrance and room into which one could walk. After considering the buildings in Chicago, he decided to design something that would complement the vertical area. He envisioned a horizontal sculpture that would connect the clouds in the sky with the city's skyscrapers. The art designer's goal was to create a one-of-a-kind public photo station. The developer had an objective of bringing together all the religions by creating a piece that was acceptable to the Christians, Hindus, and Buddhists in the country. He also sought to bring out his thoughts into a tangible and visible structure. The beauty of the sky was also to be implemented in his work as he presented the clouds’ beauty manifested in a sculpture that would harmonize the differences between the skyline and the developed city of Chicago.

The cloud gate also referred to as ‘the bean’ was developed by Anish Karpoor in 2004. The sculpture is located in Millennium Park, Illinois. The structure is weighted in 110 tones. Its surface is well polished with a reflective surface and a stainless surface. It has a skyline background making one view a kind of a floating cloud in the sculpture. The sculpture is an illusion and in line with all religious sects. The silver structure of the monument with full polished stainless plates makes the sculpture highly reflective capturing Chicago’s skyline. Its features make the monument perfect for photo shoots. The reflective silver surface also allows the sculpture to change appearance depending on light from time to time. For instance, its look when the sun is bright, it is different from the look when it is cloudy. This gives the sculpture a bright or sullen feel depending on the weather condition.

The sculpture explores the deceit theme by giving the viewer a chance to think about what exactly it is.
