A Walk Through Jackson Heights

In the morning of March 18th at around 11:00 am I set up for a walk in the Jackson Heights Neighbourhood.  My walk started at 70th Street in avenue 34. At avenue 34, I saw a café going by the name Billiards Cafe which was next to a club known as Bowling. Although club bowling was not very busy at the moment, a resident of the avenue 34 by the name Liam told me that mostly on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays this club usually hosts a lot of customers. A club is strategically located making it an ample destination for the lovers of lovers of alcohol and those who wish to relax on Sundays. I observed that avenue 34 has many private houses as one walks towards avenue 35. Additionally, Queens Artificial Kidney Centre on the left as one walks from avenue 34 to avenue 35.

While approaching avenue 35, I could easily observe the beautiful trees that beautified its surroundings. At Leverich Street, both sides are lined with many apartments. I continued to walk towards 69th Street where I saw the Regal Heights Rehabilitation and Care Centre on the left. From avenue 35 I headed towards avenue 36 where many private residential houses could be seen. This was also mixed with apartments indicating that this area is mostly a residential place both for low-income earners and the rich.

Still at avenue 35, 70th street is on the right walking further ahead I found avenue 37th near 71st street. On the left, there were many apartments, groceries, and pharmacies. This indicated that this area is a significant shopping center where residents come to get many the goods and services. From here I came to 72th street in avenue 37. To my left, many apartments are indicating either it was a residential area, but then there were many businesses taking place. Additionally, there are many private residents, and the streets are busy and with lots of people making it busy. When I reached near 35th, I saw a Masjid that was near 72nd street. There were also several groceries, and a store that one could easily tell was convenient to many residents given to the number of buyers who could be seen there.

At 72nd Avenue, there several business operations including Laundromats, pharmacies, dental cares, homeopathic stores, and groceries on the right-hand side. There is an agro vet between 71st and 72nd streets and 35th avenue. Several private schools and private residents are many here. At 73rd street, there is a private school by the name PS-230, and a junior high school is located at Mary Sarro Way. Many private apartments are available. At avenue 37 in 37th street, there are many different businesses like restaurants, groceries, clothing stores where many of their operations are easily identified to be the Indians, Bengali, Nepali, or Pakistan.

A large building known as Duane Reade is on the left-hand side where a branch of TD Bank and other different business are housed. On the left of 74th, a branch of the HAB bank can be seen. There are many apartments as well as a Junior high school. 230 annex which is a found building is located at near 75th street. The weather here is cold with that seems to have kept people in their houses a reason there are only a few people. In 37th avenue on 75th street, there are many private apartments indicating that the area could majorly be a residential area. When I met a certain lady here known as Jane, she told me that actually in this neighborhood actually most of the occupants are residents making the place peaceful and quiet from the helter-skelter that comes with busy industrial or commercial centers. Nevertheless, at 75th street there is further down was a busy area with all the typical businesses moving fast making the place busy.

On 76th avenue, I saw a Food town supermarket and an ATM outlet belonging to DIME bank housed in this same building. There is an apartment in the building on the right-hand side, and I notice that this must be the largest apartment in this area. On the left, in 34th to 35th street, there are apartments too and a medical office. Towards 77th street, I saw only one apartment which houses a medical office going by the name of doctor-zenaida Espino-Santos. There was also a PS-69 school which offered lessons from grades 1 to 5. Towards 78th street I meet a busy environment since many different businesses are taking place like pharmacies, groceries, and several stores. People could be seen streaming in and out of the business premises. Apple bank is located here too on the street known as Revera Corner.

Setting from 37th avenue to the 30th avenue made me see several apartment buildings. From 34th street to 78t street there is a playground where no one is in the field since construction seemed to be going on. From 72nd to 78th street in 35th avenue there is a medical office near 73rd for private caregivers. There are a few apartments, and no avenue was observed here. The time is about 1:15 pm, so I set back to relax in my house.

Manhattan Neighbourhood

The walk here happened between 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm on March 18th, 2018 which was hours after I had conducted the Jackson Heights Neighborhood walk. So setting up the walk from 43rd street in Lexington Avenue I could see chase bank, a subway and very many cars in the streets. This gave an impression of a very busy area, and this could be attested too from the many street lights located in every place to light all the directions. From 43rd Street, I walked towards 37th street, where I saw street Loft De Jenerio clothing store on the 42nd street. Also, I saw Walgreens outlet. People are very busy with shopping and therefore moved with speed from one end to the other. There is this very interesting restaurant in 41st

street known as “Everyday”. In the same locality, there were outlets for Cuban cuisine, Starbucks Coffee shop on 4th street, Bank of America, Salons, and Bloom's restaurant. The few bars here were filled with people who came to take a few bottles of beer and glasses of wine to wind up the weekend and prepare themselves for the busy working schedules of the following day.  Most of the customers in the bars are white giving an impression of one race city. Down the way, there were also shops of other small buildings like salons and dry cleaners. There are apartment buildings that seemed at this time of the day to be housing only the bars and restaurants given to their vibrant operations.

After stopping a little at 37th street, I walked though Lexington to 3rd avenue. Here most bars were present but at the same time restaurants, salons could be seen. The streets here were not very busy with people but all the business and enjoyment of this area could be attested to have been taken to the bars since it was very clear there was a lot of fun there given the music volumes that could be heard and the vibrant nature of life that could be witnessed from there. In 3rd avenue too, FedEx office was present. On 41st street there is an apartment that housed a bank by the name Country bank and Gap clothing store near it. 42nd street has Wells Fargo Bank on the left, TD bank on 43rd Avenue. Here also, there were these constructors who were busy with their work constructing a big apartment in 211 street. Between 3rd avenue and 2nd avenue called Hampton and a salon known as Antonios. From 2nd avenue Street to 37th street more banks, clothing stores, bars, and restaurant, and salons are lined up on both sides of the streets. There is a Sussex shop between 42nd and 41st Avenue.

Many cars here are painted in yellow were located here. This is an indication that the taxi business here is a fast moving business and that given to the luxury of the many are and restaurants, this business must be well paid. There large apartments here on both sides of the streets which could be seen to house lots of different small as well as big businesses. In between Lexington Park Avenue and 38th street, there was I was lucky to meet this seemingly tipsy gentleman by the name Antony who offered to give some tips about the city life here. He told me life in Manhattan is very enjoyable and that he is experienced in the life of this city since he grew up here, loved its life, and so he chose to remain here forever. He said that the city of New York is a good haven of happiness and that with good money you are sure to enjoy to your fullest.

A mid-level aged woman called Suzy also offered to give a story about the city. She said that rich guys always flock here with big money which they spent in the clubs and restaurants. She, however, said that for the bankrupt or poor this was not the city for them. From her explanation, one could guess that she was experienced in life in the city and her short dress at this time of the night and confidence in what she talked with indicated the possibility of another business here. The number of ladies looking like her could be seen crisscrossing the roads either with a man or being in groups that compelled me to think that this town also had prostitution business. I held the question from Suzy due to ethical considerations and the fact that I wanted her to be free with the conversation. After the talk with her, I took to the road again and walked quietly, observing the fun and beauty of this city and by the time I was reaching my house I surely could attest that this is a city of “Happiness”
