Zoe Leonard basically is a feminist activist, who wrote the poem ‘I want a President.’ Some of the works she has done is influenced by the occurrence of HIV/AIDS in the early 1980s.The desire to have an elected leader, one who has experienced the hardships of a common man pushes her so hard to a point of her using artistic expression to pass the message of the president she has in mind to fellow Americans.
The poem faced lots of challenges being published. However after its publication
some individual’s termed it as something which was already copied, hence its authenticity and originality of the content was somehow distorted. Most Americans could not access the document at their doorstep because technology advancement had not taken roots by then. By 2006 the document had been published in various versions hence gaining more attention to the republicans. Consequently the message was well driven home ,people could read ,interpret analyze and understand the content very well want a fag for president is a term used by Zoë Leonard to mean someone from humble beginnings ,someone who can relate well to the common problems taking place at grass root level where the common tax payer operates.
Common similarities in how Zoe Leonard organizes her works is the use of a new way of thinking in terms of how she walks away from the norm of how things have been done from the past. A suitable example is how she wants a leader who has been raised from humble beginnings in some of the arts. In addition the use of catchy words and interesting phrases. Examples are “AIDS’’ andI want someone who has been in a relation affair and as a result he she has been hurt respectively in the poem I want a dyke President. The photography in her works are so diverse designed to meet the desires of the reader especially political readers. Differences which are commonly seen is the use of diversity in her ideas in different works.
Hollard Cotter describes Zoe Leonard’s photography works as fodder of internet, meaning the artwork is of high level as compared to that of other artistic works. The content from her work is well understood and felt at heart by everyone who comes across her art works. She speaks the truth no matter what the idea she is talking of .Actually it is an awesome experiencing her photography the reason being that the artwork is perfectly brought out so well. The argument that it (the artwork) resembles a hashtag feed for NIagra falls? Is quite true because of the fine art used.
Zoe Hollard works are well thought about, well designed bearing in mind that the art work was done in an era where the relevant materials for such designs had not been available. However when the context is placed in current situation you find that it is still relevant that when someone tries to read and interpret it one can pin point the main ideas and themes of aids crisis because the artwork is still relevant and efficiently done.
In conclusion, what I think of Zoe Leonard’s works generally the artwork is of another level, well thought about ,well designed especially how she expresses major themes her work any reader can pinpoint the ideas presented without any straining to capture them. Especially in her artwork “I want a President” the message is well driven home. Ideas, concepts, points the photography work and illustrations brings out a well thought method of communication.
