In relation to the information found on the New Catholic Encyclopedia, there is a revelation about Wiligelmo’s creation and temptation that was considered a fundamentally prominent sculpture at the time. The source further notes that an inscription on a tablet buttressed by the prophets Enoch and Elias appearing on the front of Modena cathedral has an indication of the date when the cathedral was founded (Wiligelmo). This dates back to 1099, in which Wiligelmo is quoted as the chief sculptor. A section of the sculpture was made and finished later in 1106 under the influence of Wiligelmo. These are detailed achievements of the sculptor that are not covered on page 365 of the textbook.
In addition, the online source reveals that the greater portal of the west front at Modena consist of reliefs of twelve prophets, giving the chronology of events from the time man was created all through to the building of Noah’s Ark of Covenant. There are some figures included in the sculpture having short and heavy bodies, forming an arrangement in frieze-like structures below an arcade. The online resource further reveals that there are no direct prototypes for the figurative style in the ancient Lombard art, despite having roots of Modena door’s structure from an ancient portal (Wiligelmo). The picture shown on the textbook page indicate the winged genii, however, it does not explain that Wiligelmo extensively relied on rustic Roman caskets and funeral stelae.
Therefore, the discussion in this essay has presented what has been learned from the online resource that the book did not cover accordingly. Wiligelmo’s contribution in the history of art is immeasurably large and should be properly documented in historical records and books for upcoming readers to learn in detail.
