The Debate on Legalizing Prostitution
The phraseology prostitution refers to the practice or siness of engaging in sexual activities in exchange for money or other valuables. Essentially this assignment is steered at writing an argumentative essay that deliberates on whether prostitution should be made legal or not. Currently prostitution is illegal in the United States of America and persons found guilty of the offence are liable for punishment and imprisonment. In order to come up with a comprehensive argumentative essay that is coherent and full of flow, both pathos and logos will be used to explain the reason behind my stance.
DISCUSSION
Based on my understanding about the negative outcomes and implications associated with prostitution, I believe that prostitution should not be legalized now or in the future. To begin with, prostitution should not be made legal since this form of siness is not allowed in all religions (Jennifer, p. 17). As of today, there are several religions such as Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism and neither of them advocates for it. Predominantly, the legalization of prostitution translates to going against religious practices and cultures since nobody wants to be on the wrong side during judgement day or oppose their God.
Next in order, prostitution should not be legalized since sexually transmitted diseases/infections may be on the rise as soon as the practice is legalized (Jennifer, p. 23). Primarily sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS have no cure, once you are infected there is no going back. As of now HIV/AIDS is one of the major killer disease all over the World, millions have succumbed to the disease. Apart from HIV/AIDS, other STI include syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital warts and trich. Reflective of the information above, if prostitution is legalized, the prevalence of the diseases indicated is likely to shoot up. For purposes of ensuring the safety of tomorrow's society, prostitution should not be legalized.
Thirdly, prostitution should not be legalized as it may lead to the rise of other social vices and crimes. For starters, the legalization of prostitution in most parts of the World during the twenty first century led to increased human trafficking. Immediately after the fall of communism, individuals from areas stricken with poverty and wars were lured with promises of a better future, life and great job opportunities. Instead of being presented with this favorable, they were sold in other countries to act as sexual slaves (Jennifer, p. 31). If by any chance America decides to legalize prostitution, it is evidently clear that human trafficking is likely to increase. Currently the American government does not support human trafficking and if the country decides to legalize prostitution it simply means they are also legalizing human trafficking. Another reason why prostitution should not be legalized is that this form of siness practice is responsible for a majority of unwanted pregnancies in America and the World in general. In most cases, prostitutes end up conceiving yet they are not mentally, socially and financially stable. On top of that, most of them do not know who is responsible for their pregnancies. In the end, most prostitutes end up committing other forms of social vices such as abortion and corrupting medics to carry out the operations.
On to the fifth point, prostitution should not be legalized since most prostitutes often endanger their lives by engaging with people they barely know about. Some of the people that prostitutes engage with are have bad criminal records and they might be thieves or even murderers. Based on this information, it is clearly evident that if prostitution is legalized prostitutes are likely to be endangered (Jennifer, p. 47). As much as prostitution is viewed to be a victimless crime and it is supposed to be private between two consenting adults, the government of America ought to mind about the welfare of every person. Over the past years, sex workers all over the World have been seen demonstrating over the abuse of their protection and security rights. In case America wants to protect every single American citizen, the best option is not to legalize prostitution. Other implications that may be associated with the legalization of prostitution is rape and stigma. Reflective of countries that have legalized prostitution, most prostitutes are often raped since they are weak and vulnerable. Stigma is also widely spread and prostitutes are often treated as second class citizens. In order to ensure fairness, equity and prevent any form of stigma, the government ought to ensure prostitution is not made legal now and in the future.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, prostitution should not be legalized. Reflective of the information in the essay above, prostitution should not be legalized as it may lead to high prevalence rates of sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS, chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhea, trich and genital warts. Next in order, prostitution might lead to increased human sex slavery, trafficking and unwanted pregnancies. Prostitution also puts the risks of prostitutes at risk. Individualistically, I do not believe that the licensing, regulation and decriminalization of prostitution is likely to improve or solve the implications associated with the siness.
