What Happened to the Good Men?
Kay Hymowitz wrote an article that appeared in the Wall Street Journal. In the piece, young men in the present world are portrayed as failures when contrasted to young men in their twenties at the time. This has been linked mostly to a lack of ambition and carelessness. Many young women have been left wondering where the nice men have gone. "Today's pre-adults are a different story...a significant demographic event" (Hymowitz 2). This paper will not look at the article's summary but rather evaluate it in a way that breaks down the content. The breaking of the parts will separate it from the whole in order to make the analysis easy to understand. The essay will, therefore, look at 'how' Kay wrote the article rather that 'what' he wrote through employing various analysis strategies such as ethos, assumptions, and logical fallacies.
Influence of Pre-Adulthood
In the article, Hymowitz initially employed the tactic of organizing the piece into sections that can be considered are vaguely presented. The arguments on the concept of pre-adulthood were followed by a reverse of sexes as well as the increasing gap in gender since early 1990 (Hymowitz 2). The author focused deeper into the issue of pre-adulthood and the reasons behind its emergence. As he presents these facts, she further scrutinized the issue by breaking it into three main sections which are the media influence, the knowledge on economy and the college premium. A conclusion on these ideas is presented through a comparison between adolescence and the pre-adulthood and the disadvantages of the age gap to the society, marriage and the adult life.
Effects of Pre-Adulthood on Society
The article reveals that the Hymowitz was aiming at making the readers aware of the issues that surround the pre-adulthood besides letting them know that it exists and it impacts on the society as a whole. This was an effective way of examining the aforementioned effects that are negative to the demography. To achieve this, the author was using appropriate data that was supporting her ideas and opinions through the examples of the current day (Sanders & Charles 12). "... 1970, just 16% of Americans ages 25-29 had never been married; today it is an astonishing 55% of the age group" (Hymowitz 4).These events further heighten the credibility of the arguments making them more appealing to the targeted audience. Although she appears to be laying the blame on women at the early stages of the article, she effectively captures the attention of the readers through conversing with them, particularly the parents. Besides the parents, another targeted group in the population is the millennial generation. These two groups were responsible for the growing population of the pre-adults.
Critical Evaluation of Hymowitz's Perspective
However, from the ideas presented, Hymowitz can be considered as being conservative and criticizing the millennial generation (Lucke 674-674). She assumed the kind of strategies that would be appealing and persuasive enough to these sections of people in the population. This fact clearly comes out in her tome that is satirical and systematic that from one time to the other employ a biased perspective. To be safe in these argument's the author was calculative enough and decided to use both male and female positions of the millennial generation and further avoided the evidence appropriation. The solutions put forth were viable to the situation facing the pre-adulthood.
Fair Representation and Gender Neutrality
Furthermore, the data manipulation can be considered as being intentional to influence the minds of like-minded readers. However, if every person in the society was accurately presented, the credibility was effectively heightened, and all can see her point of argument on the pertinent issue even if one might be skeptical. To make the presentation of these facts more appealing, Hymowitz would have appreciated the fact that not all men are lazy. Besides, the author should also have appreciated that pre-adulthood is not a phase that is gender-specific.
