In my view, the music of today is essentially ROMANTIC since almost every today’s music focusses on self-expression of emotion without considering the various rules of music. Romanticism has influenced almost every genre of today’s music because modern artists are trying to be more personal and emotional in their compositions. Besides, today’s music artists compose their pieces freely based on their feelings as opposed to set musical rules and laws. Most musical artists are focused on expressing all forms of their emotions without considering the various laws that guide musical compositions.
On of the pieces that reflect the romantic nature of today’s music is Lukas Graham’s “7 Years,” which has gained popularity due to the emotional appeal created by its lyrics and sound. Graham’s melodic piano introduction creates a nostalgic sound, which sets the mood for his emotional piece about his journey to success and the fleeting time people have on earth. Just like the Romantic era, Graham’s piece is full of honest expressions that make the audience to feel the song.
Other songs that exhibit the romantic nature of today’s music include "Heavy-dirty-soul" and "Fairly Local" by Twenty-One Pilots, which portray the struggles of battling insecurities, overcoming depression, and disregarding the consensus. The Twenty-One Pilots’ lead singer, Joseph Tyler, expresses what he is going through in the lyrics with honesty, which makes the songs to touch those struggling with similar problems. Apart from the lyrics used by the Twenty-One Pilots, the band’s songs are also made romantic by the diversity of their sound. In fact, it is hard to identify the Twenty-One Pilots’ genre since they seem to be experimenting with all sorts of equipment and instrument to fulfil the characteristic dynamics music, which reflects the Romantic Era.
The music of the Romantic Era was all about expressing, arousing, and awakening the audience’s emotions. Today’s composers, like those of the Romantic Era, are focusing on expressing their deepest concerns and life passions, as well as conveying their real feelings by being honest. Therefore, today’s music is essentially ROMANTIC.
