The Role of Student Service-learners in Saving the Children

Save the children is an independent international organization which deals with children rights issues. The organization has members in 27 countries and operational programs in over 100 countries. The organization was established in 1919 in the United Kingdom by two sisters, Dorothy Buxton and Eglantyne Jebb with the aim of preventing starvation of children during World War 1 in Germany. The organization focuses on fighting for the children's rights and improves the lives of children worldwide (Sawhill " Williamson, 2001). Save the children help provide the children with better health care, education, economic activities, and emergency services during natural disasters. Student service-learners can help accomplish the mission of this organization by forming groups in which they make the community, government, and parents aware of their priorities and concerns.

The future vision of saving the children organization is to provide better education by ensuring that all children access quality primary education. Also, it aims at providing better health care to children by ensuring that no child dies from diseases that are preventable before reaching 5years of age (de Bernis, Kinney, Stones, Hoope-Bender, Vivio,  Leisher, " Franco, 2016). Additionally, the organization would like to reduce violence against children by fighting for the rights of the children. To achieve these goals, the organization will reach children from the most deprived and marginalized areas to and provide better health care, educational, and fight for their rights. Student service-learners can participate in their communities by encouraging their peers to participate in the Save the children activities. Also, they can share their positive experiences with children to motivate them. By being advocates in the program, they act as role models to the young children, parents, and their peers who would appreciate education and the efforts of the organization.

One of the challenges save the children is facing in its bid to achieve its vision is the enormous gap between human needs that need to be met and the available resources. Many times the crisis that needs to be addressed requires more than the organization has. The organization can overcome this challenge by applying new technological innovations to reach more people with a need for fewer costs. Public indifference fueled by the media is another challenge which the organization can overcome by adopting better governance and communication strategies to win the trust of the public (Gnaerig " MacCormack, 1999). World Vision has partnered with various organizations to increase its funding. Also, it has built confidence among public contributors by enabling them to choose how to donate, not sharing their details, and not calling them unless the volunteers decided to contact the organization.

Save the children should educate the public on the importance of helping the needy and the courses that need to be achieved in a given area so that the public is aware of the need to contribute and towards what projects. Edwards (1997) mention that the organization can also engage the community in its activities so that they feel part of the change hence welcome the initiative more. A service learning opportunity would help the students, and the community learns about humanitarian services, how they work and their importance. Consequently, their lives will be improved.

Save the children is a non-government organization with the future aims of helping the children to be protected, learn, and survive. Student service-learners can help the organization achieve its mission through participating as advocates. Through their participation, they would appreciate the roles of humanitarian organizations.
