The Essence of Iconography in the Biblical Story of Jesus Washing the Feet of His Disciples

The word “iconography” defines a conventional image or symbol associated with religion or legendry, with the term also referring to a pictorial material relating or illustrating a subject. Therefore, in the current world, many ideologies and practices exist that can act as icons that people in our society can emulate. Icons are a vital element for our communities, one example being the emulation of church clergy to improve morals in the society. This analysis discusses the essence of iconography in the biblical story of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples.

The Act of Jesus Washing His Disciples' Feet

According to John 13:1-20, Jesus washed his disciples’ feet in the upper room during the last supper in a period when he had limited time remaining here on earth. He did this in an effort to show humility to the disciples in the same way that we should emulate the same character when serving despite the ranks we may hold in our churches or society. Moreover, the attitude that Jesus had towards servanthood acted as a contrast to the idea of the disciples, who were arguing among themselves about who among them was the greatest. Jesus lowered himself to a servant’s position and washed the disciples’ feet. To Christians, the washing of the feet thereby becomes symbolic of the importance of service to others in society.

The Lesson of Humility and Service

In conclusion, when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, he told them that he had given them a lesson on humility and service and that they should emulate his example (John 13:15). This act also set a precedent for the behavior of the Christian fellowship, helping to emphasize the role of serving each other without harboring any negative attitudes regarding this service. In this regard, seeking preeminence would mean displeasing the Lord who in Mark 9:35 promised that those with servant's hearts would be the only ones to attain the greatness of his kingdom.
