The Issue of Deportation of Undocumented Immigrants

I write as one of your staunch supporters, a republican voter from the state of New York. I am here to express my opinion on the current immigrant law about undocumented immigrants, specifically on the issue of deportation of the undocumented immigrants.

Studies have indicated that, majority of the illegal immigrants have crossed to the United States (U.S) because they are either fleeing from their birth countries from either never-ending wars, naturally occurring disasters, unjust economic status, while some are out to look for greener pastures.

Over the years the U.S. has had in place many laws and regulations which have been aimed at limiting the number of undocumented immigrants into the country. Your administration has largely enforced policies such as the forced separation and the zero-tolerance policy.  The forced separation policy has seen nearly 700 children separated from their parents at the borders, while the zero-tolerance policy mandated that all who were apprehended while trying to cross the border illegally would be transferred into the custody of the U.S. Marshall Services (USMS), tried in the court, serve their sentence and eventually removed from the country (Chishti and Bolter).  These policies are a strain to the tax payers as well as causes a strain on the already existing resources.

An effective alternative would be to increase the border security while aiming at ensuring that immigrants do not access the U.S. borders. Other advantages of increased border security include, control of the spread in diseases and communicable infections, limit the entry of possible criminals, and securing the paychecks of the ordinary American. These measures are equally advantageous to the immigrants as it helps them keep safe from falling victim to unscrupulous individuals who endanger their lives and also limits the possibility of the immigrants lacking necessary services that ensure their safety once they cross the borders (Anderson).

Another alternative would be to prompt undocumented immigrants to reveal themselves voluntarily. This can be followed by legalization undocumented immigrants. It’s been noted that legalization of immigrants results into fundamental social and economic benefits. The transition of the immigrants from informal sectors of employment in the formal sectors may consequentially result to increased wages and increased tax payments. Unlike strict immigration policies, legalization facilitates and encourages family ties and unity.  Also, this prompts the immigrants to make improvement in their lives through investments, language acquisition, career development as well as other activities that promote social cohesion.

Lastly, it’s been noted that deportation has adverse effects on the specific individuals, their families and the community around them. Research indicates that there are numerous cases of deportation that have ultimately led to harm on the individuals in question.

For all these reasons, I urge you to reconsider your stance on policies affecting illegal immigrants in the US.

Yours sincerely,
