World Wide Web may encourage the creation of monopolies. Tremendous growth experienced by the online business may be a threat to competitors. Substantial economies of scale enjoyed by online companies give them a competitive advantage over their competitor which may eventually force a competitor out of the market thus creating monopolies.
Editorialist view
Monopolies should be made illegal. The theory of monopoly argues that monopolies lead to job losses by the competitors. Also, consumers are likely to be exploited through higher prices (Waldman). Moreover, monopolies create separate classes of people. Monopolists acquire a lot of wealth at the expense of other people creating a massive gap between the poor and the rich. Therefore, monopolies should be made illegal.
