Prudence, Temperance, Justice, and Courage are the four cardinal virtues (Fortitude). Prudence, also known as patience, refers to one's capacity to offer judgment between acts by employing appropriate actions at the appropriate time. Justice, also known as fairness, is the most important and comprehensive of all virtues. Temperance, also known as discipline, is the exercise of abstinence, self-control, and hunger moderation. Courage, also known as fortitude, courage, forbearance, and stamina, refers to a person's capacity to face doubt, terror, and intimidation. I find the four cardinal virtues to be influential because they form the necessary virtues for a righteous life and play a pivotal role in making me lead a worthy and moral life. Besides, the four cardinal virtues influence by actions and thinking in a broad range of ways. Prudence gives me the practical reason to determine my true good in all circumstances, as well as identify the right way of achieving it. Due to the help of the virtue of prudence, I remain focused in my life objectives. It, therefore, guides my judgment of conscience, as well as determines and directs my conduct according to the guided judgment. Additionally, with the assistance of prudence virtue, I apply moral principles in various cases with minimal error. It, therefore, helps me in overcoming doubts about the right things I should achieve and the evil practices I should avoid.
The virtue of justice gives me the sense of respecting other people's rights, as well as establishing harmony in my relationships so as to promote equity for the common good. Besides, being a just person makes me conduct myself with uprightness and right thinking towards my friends, family, and neighbors. Additionally, the virtue of justice always reminds me of the God's Ten Commandments, which state what it takes to have God's love, as well as the love of neighbor. It, therefore, reminds me of the importance of loving others, which I often take into consideration when making various decisions.
With the help of temperance virtue, I always have the ability to moderate my attractions to pleasures, as well as control my appetite for different created goods. It assists me in keeping my desires within honorable and acceptable limits, as well as makes me direct my desires towards morally essential and accepted things. Additionally, the virtue of temperance guides my thinking in the direction of acting in a manner that does to demean my dignity and reputation.
The virtue of courage or fortitude helps me to remain firm during times of difficulty and enables me to be consistent in my pursuit of various goals in life. Besides, with the aid of the virtue of courage, I often develop strength in resisting temptations and overcoming various obstacles in my pursuit to lead a moral life. Additionally, the virtue of courage enables me to overcome fear and face various trials in my defense a just case.
In overall, the four cardinal virtues play an important role in my life since they make significant contributions to making me lead a righteous and moral life by guiding both my actions and thinking. The four virtues are always elevated and purified by divine grace, and with God’s assistance, they often forge a positive character in an individual by instilling moral behavior. I am therefore happy to practice them since they make me a virtuous person.
