The Effects of Urban Life on Health

Urban Life and its Impact on Health

Urban life does not only take a toll on people’s health but in well-being in general with more than half of the population in the world living in the cities. A lot of pollution, traffic and noise are some of the challenges people face in the cities hence higher rates of people suffering from mental illnesses due to stress. Furthermore, people’s health is much affected by environmental pollutants as a result of frequent exposure to pollutants for an extended period. Also, people living in urban areas are more susceptible to allergies as well as increased chances of getting asthma due to the polluted air, especially for children. Moreover, cities have too much noise from cars, sirens, loud music among others which at long run may affect the health of the city dwellers (Macionis, 2017).

Also, urbanization promotes social integration since people of different origins and religions live and work together which helps in breaking cultural, discrimination and language barriers. On the other hand, despite all the positives of urban life, there exist several negative aspects.  The metropolitan cities are overcrowded due to large populations moving in thus leading to land insecurities and growing of slums. The need to accommodate the growing population results to clearance of forested areas thus threating natural flora and fauna and risking extinction of animals as well as trees.  Urban areas are more prone to terrorist attacks (Clydesdale, 2018).
