The chief engineer contracted to build a bridge connecting the island of Manhattan, and the City of Brooklyn passes on due to an infectious wound after sustaining an injury. His son, William Roebling, also an engineer takes over to get the job done. In an unfortunate twist of fate, he falls sick and is incapable of performing his engineering duties on site(Amazing People). What follows is a story with two relevant themes – women’s role in the society and love.
Emily Roebling, the remarkable character in this story, for the love of her husband is determined to protect his legacy in what would become one of the most regarded engineering work in American history. With no prior knowledge of architectural practice, she acts as a link between the workers and the husband to see the bridge is faithfully and imaginatively competed. This show of courage comes at a time when women in America were beginning to stake a real public claim both in the workplace and more broadly regarding social equality.
The fact that Emily was able to take over her husband's duties, including supervising constructions and coming up with her ideas, when women were regarded as not able to accomplish anything outside the homes show the ingenuity of women. It is a motivation to ladies to rise above the odds and has confidence in their abilities. Nothing speaks clearly to the importance of giving women equal opportunities to men, like this story.
The inspirational aspects of Emily's story are her determination to see the work of her husband completed. By not running from her responsibilities and indispensably taking care of her husband, she portrays care and subtlety, an aspect of elegance every successful woman must harbour.
