Although people are struggling to find treatment for diseases like AIDS and cancer, the modern era is healthier compared to hundred years ago. Human beings have come close to extinction through sicknesses like smallpox, Cholera, and Typhus. However, humanity has managed to withstand their effects and survive. A review of historical documents reveals that an event called the Black Death that threatened to wipe out people in all nations beginning with the European States. The mysterious disease continues to scare medics and historians who are still digging up facts to solve the puzzle.
The symptoms of the disease made people believe it was similar to the septicemic or bubonic plague. The microorganism called coccobacillus spread by fleas found on rats’ fur is said to be behind the Black Death. Analysis of modern-day Europe reveals that the people have a good sanitary condition and excellent hygiene. However, the 14th century’s condition in the continent was different hence the spread of the disease. The era was also characterized by illiteracy, poverty and all types of superstitions. Even the rich and the loyal families did not understand the need for keeping the environment clean. King Louis XIV was at the forefront spreading superstition that the affected people could get cured through bathing and applying perfumes.
Medical research in the 14th century was not as effective as today and as a result burning and deeply burying the bodies were necessary steps to control the spread. The church had equally failed to offer solutions, and as a result, millions of people lost their lives. The modern world has made many advancements in the field of medical research, and hopefully, Black death will never infect the people.
