This paper looks through the sensory work in campus. It relates the walk in campus to the essence of Dana Haugaard’s work. Dana Haugaard’s work is related to more of art on the things that are in the surrounding. It is art that works with the sound and the sensation so as to be able to identify self-awareness at any given time depending on the place, time and space we are at. The paper therefore looks basically into the visual artworks of Dana Haugaard from Emory and there after connects it to the sensory walk through campus.
Introduction
Dana Haugaard is an artist that works with sound and sensation in identifying self-awareness in accordance to time, place and space of the individual. The artist creates an environment that brings about provoking the individual into awareness of themselves. The artists uses and manipulates sound, surfaces that can be reflected and vibrating obstacles to create experiences that can attract attention to the environment. All this is done so as to play with the physical and temporal and make the experience overwhelming (Haugaard).
Discussion
During the sensory walk through campus, which happened in earlier September, we have stared at the cafeteria from the window outside, we had sat down in the middle of the library, ran away from the situation, walked through trees and shallow streams. At first, I felt a little embarrassed, but as walk proceeded and other classmates seem to participate more I also was able to think out of the box. I realized that everyone had their own capabilities that working together through the campus would make work easier and as I watched people converse, laugh, learn and do most of the activities together it brought about unity. I could see time pass through the days very fast it would be morning with the sun sparkling everywhere, then noon and then suddenly darkness would cover everywhere. This made me think that the walk would be short and within sometime the time to be spent in campus would be over and then we would have to part ways for everyone to get somewhere to apply their skills. This meant that it was short term and nothing lasts too long.
The view of the growth of the plantation within the environment of the campus got me thinking widely. Seeing the grass get cut, growing and the process repeating itself, the trees grow higher and higher with time and the volume of the water in the streams increasing at different seasons. During the good seasons that would favor the plantation in the environment, the plants would grow beautifully. This made me realize that there are different seasons and every season and everything that happens at its own right time has its advantage. The growth of the plantation brought out the reason for being in campus and the purpose. It was to grow in the areas of studying specialization. The education instilled in us was just as the good season that favored the plantation and it was to enable us to become better and to be enlightened and be informed.
The conversations with my classmates brought about many factors that created awareness of myself in various ways. One is able to make everything meaningful from the things that surround them.
