Management is the process of carrying out management duties and responsibilities with the aid of managerial abilities. Planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and reviewing are some of the duties of management. The Conceptual, interpersonal, and technical elements all come under managerial competence. The manager's responsibilities include sharing information, keeping an eye on things, handling disruptions, negotiating, allocating resources, and acting as an entrepreneur. Being the figurehead, spokesperson, liaison manager, and leader are additional managerial duties. As the head of the Grizzlies' basketball operations, Jerry West must use managerial abilities to fulfill his managerial responsibilities. West is an entrepreneur as he understands the business of professional basketball and its position within the culture. West's ability to effectively communicate with staff and the external constituencies makes him a leader hence able to carry out the leading function of management. As a spokesperson and a good liaison manager, West is able to communicate to company's stakeholders. Being able to view the Grizzly enterprise from a gestalt perspective is a show of good managerial planning and use of the conceptual managerial skills. Being the president of the franchise, West assumes the managerial role of monitoring. Also, West executes the managerial role of being a figurehead as he is the president of the organization. Establishing the goals of the organization and its members shows that West is carrying his managerial function of planning. Providing the leadership to see that those goals are accomplished show that West is assuming the managerial function of a leader. He leads the staff towards achieving the organization's set goals and objectives. For effectiveness of achieving the set goals, West has to provide the necessary information, distribute the required resources, negotiate for good deals, and settle down disagreements among the employees. Carrying out activities to ensure effectiveness shows that West is carrying out his managerial roles of monitoring, disseminating information, handling disturbances, negotiating for the company, and allocating the needed resources. Managing the working process and the employees show West's ability to carry out the managerial function of organizing. Appointing Hubie Brown as the Grizzlies head coach shows that West is carrying out his managerial function of staffing. Besides, replacing Brown with Mike Fratello who is more competent as the head coach to ensure succession reveals the ability of West to use conceptual, human, and technical managerial skills.
2. West was able to ascend to an executive position in professional sports due to a background in the field of sports. Jerry West had had a Hall of Fame career with the Los Angeles Lakers. Wests position in the Lakers gave him the proper understanding of basketball rules, regulations, and winning tactics. His team had won the championships and therefore West knows the best ways of winning tournaments in order to become winners. The experience with the Lakers would be used by West to propel his team to start winning trophies and championships. In addition to being a player, West was a coach hence he has the expertise and experience of handling a team. Being a coach gave West the opportunity to attain management skills necessary as a president of Grizzlies. Therefore, West's experience in the Los Angeles Lakers as a player and later as a coach helped him achieve success in his career.
3. Conceptual, human, and technical managerial skills would be most effective in helping West to achieve his goals of winning the NBA championship. West has to combine three sets of managerial skills for his plans to succeed (Daft and Marcic 18). He needs to understand how to select the best players to participate in the game hence applying his conceptual skills. Motivating and managing the players to ensure they are comfortable and fit to play would call for West's human managerial skills. For his team to win, they need the best tactics that would help them outshine their rivals to win the NBA championship. Teaching the team about the winning tactics of the game would require West's technical managerial skills. Therefore, for West's team to win the NBA championship, he has to use conceptual, human, and technical managerial skills.
4. Memphis Grizzlies is similar to National Basketball Association (NBA) in that they execute the managerial roles of disseminating information. Each organization uses a website to keep the fans, players, and other stakeholders informed about their progress (NBA). Additionally, through updates in the websites, both NBA and Grizzlies are able to show the stakeholders their position and progress in the various basketball leagues. Besides, both NBA and Grizzlies carry out the managerial roles liaison as they are able to interact with the outside world through their website. Means of communication to be used by fans, players, or other stakeholders for communicating with the company management are provided on the website. Also, Grizzlies and NBA organizations apply the managerial function of planning as they have organized leagues which comprises of different competing teams (Grizzlies). Through the leagues, both organizations are able to showcase their managerial skills by competing for trophies and championships. The well-managed team secures the trophies. Both NBA and Grizzlies are able to generate income through tickets and participation in the Leagues hence executing the managerial role of being entrepreneurs.
