Jack the Ripper Review

A story of mystery, fear and murder has captured the imagination of people around the world since 1888. And yet, no one has ever truly understood Jack the Ripper.

The Ripper was a Victorian killer who brutally mutilated prostitutes in London's Whitechapel district. He cut their throats and removed their abdominal organs. This was a disturbing crime, and a particularly sad one given that most of the victims were women.

In Assassin's Creed Syndicate, you can play as either Jacob or Evie, who are both capable of killing a wide variety of targets. The former focuses primarily on stealth and cover, while the latter is much more geared toward scouting out potential suspects and pursuing them.

Both have access to "fear bombs," which give them the ability to frighten their enemies. In addition to that, they both have the power to brutalize their pray, which sees them tap the square button and do a series of QTEs in order to dismember and destroy their prey.

Jack the Ripper is a good add-on to the Assassin's Creed franchise, and even if it doesn't explore the murderer's psyche as thoroughly as other games might, it does a great job of reimagining a historical figure in a new light. It's also a good opportunity to get into some new locations that weren't featured in the main campaign, and its visual style is incredibly detailed.

The game's story is delivered through the eyes of three characters, a clairvoyant who has been haunted by visions of murder, a young journalist trying to get her big break and a real-life investigator of the Ripper case, Inspector Frederick Abberline. Each of these stories adds to the story, and it helps to keep things fresh by switching between them as you progress through the game's chapters.

This method also allows the developers to introduce several different viewpoints on the subject, which is a welcome change from the often-parodic approach to the subject in other games. However, it does make the story feel a little more contrived than it should have been in some places.

Another thing that makes the game's story more engaging is its inclusion of several historical documents that give insight into the killer's motives. For example, some of the evidence suggests that he was a lonely man who killed only on weekends and only in the early morning hours. This is a fascinating detail, and it shows how the Ripper was able to go about his work without raising suspicions in the community.

It's also important to note that a letter from the killer, signed 'Jack the Ripper', was sent to a number of newspapers in September and October 1888. This letter caught on immediately, spawning a veritable avalanche of letters purporting to be written by the killer himself, which in turn helped to raise awareness about the crimes and the city of London's crime-ridden underbelly.

While Jack the Ripper is a well-rounded game and an excellent addition to the Assassin's Creed series, it suffers from a few major bugs that make it a difficult experience at times. And, unfortunately, it ends with a completely unsatisfying final chapter that leaves you feeling disappointed and frustrated.
