Homelessness in the United States

In the article “Homelessness has a black face” in the HuffPost, the article states that the scale of homelessness in the United States is reaching an alarming, especially among the African Americans. In the state of California, the number of homeless people has reached critical mass mainly due to unemployment since people cannot find and maintain good jobs. Unemployment is one of the significant macroeconomic issues, which refers to the failure to secure employment among the actively searching group. The unemployment rate is the reliable measure of unemployment, and it gives the number of people who are unemployed in comparison to the total labor force. The article relates to unemployment since many African Americans especially those who have been in prison fail to secure a good job and are forced to live in the streets and voucher houses.

According to Scott (2), the blacks are the new face of homelessness since they boost the highest unemployment rate of 11.4%, which is twice the unemployment rate for white Americans. Discrimination and prejudice among African Americans for a long time have crippled the progress of blacks leading them to become poorer and fail to secure employment leading to homelessness. Moreover, many African Americans existing prison do not have the support system necessary to find good paying jobs that can cater for child support, adequate housing, health insurance and basic needs. For this reasons many poor blacks end up homeless and turn into crimes and violence as a survival mechanism. The city of New York has the most extensive homeless population of about 73, 500 people and unfortunately, the majority are people of color who cannot secure jobs due to judicial record, lack of proper education, discrimination, and poverty(Scott 2). In conclusion, the article Homelessness has a black face touches on the issue of unemployment, which is a tremendous macroeconomic concern in many nations.
