Setting career goals help an individual in laying out directions for their ideal future. With long term and short term goals acting as a guide in helping people succeed in their careers, a person can envision themselves in reality as they make their desired progress. Following my dreams to be a fluent English speaker and potentially own lucrative, luxury hotels back in my hometown in Japan, herein is my career goal setting strategies. Additionally, goal setting techniques involving missions and visions, the SMART framework and goal achievement through objectives are defined, explained and applied in my goal setting essay below.
Mission and Vision statements
These are roadmaps of statements which help an individual achieve what they want and where they want to go. Vision provides a person with statements for the desired definition. Mission, on the other hand, is the guiding light on how to get to the desired feat. By and large, vision entails the overall picture of a career expectation while mission encompasses a series of statements on how it will be achieved. With missions and visions, organizations or individuals deploying this technique needs to enact core values that will drive the plan to the intended direction. Core values in its simplest refer to the mode of behavior expected during the goal setting and achieving process. My core values entail discipline, focus, and integrity throughout my five-year plan to boost my career. With discipline I will ensure that the laid out plans and activities to be carried out are done. Focus will give me the stamina to forge on despite potential obstacle lurking my way. With integrity, I hope to be of good character to any visitors I meet during volunteer sessions and also during my internship.
SMART Technique
This goal achieving frameworks works by detailing how goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, Realistic and Timely to be achieved. A specific goal such I want to in increase my performance level is not specific per see. A goal needs to be specific and detailed so that parties involved are not left grappling with a broad goal with no definitive end. Goals also need to be measurable so that after the designated time, parties can see just how much they have achieved from the stipulated plans. Goals should be achievable because when I say I would like to own a big hotel by next year that would not only be frivolously impossible due to financial constraints even though I need the experience to help in hotel management scenarios. A realistic goal will ensure that I achieve what is within my reach and not far-fetched goals that would be impossible to meet especially now that I am still a student. With a five year plan subdivided into short-term goals, this time will be enough to do all the volunteering and training I have planned in time.
A) My Five Year Career Goal Plan
My five-year career goal setting plan is divided into one year of attainable goals. Further, it is divided into short-term goals which are indicated by months of either training, learning or voluntary work for the development of my skills.
Year 1: (2019) January- March
Vision: To accrue communications soft skills for written material.
Mission: Attend Bray Bard School for communications and Travel.
Enroll for a three-month communications and Travelling Certificate course at Bray bard School for International Travel. While my English speaking skills have seen a revamp since I joined LA training classes, topping my already existing skills with soft skills in communication will ensure that I can not only communicate orally with tourists and foreigners during tour guides or expeditions, but it will also ensure that I can write letter requests, memorandums, travel arrangements handouts for visitors. Joining this institution requires an admission fee of 22 dollars followed by a monthly training fee of 10 dollars. Because it will be my first training especially now that my parents are cognizant of my career dreams, they have offered to carter for my stay at the school. This will reduce any expenses I have to incur as I study this course. Improving my soft communication skills is a specific goal because, despite a longing to improve my overall communication skill, I opt to polish my writing skills in communication. This
May-August
The volunteer program at Miami Beach House
During this time, I intend to apply for a volunteer program at Miami Beach house where I can learn how big hotels maneuver their way in satisfying worldwide customer needs. Miami Beach House is known for its exquisite vacation luxuries from boat riding to cruising. Here I will obtain the first-hand experience on how to handle worldwide tourists.
Year 2 & 3 (2020-2021)
Internship at Japan Finest Resort
During this one year, I intend to apply theoretical knowledge learned in the classroom to real-life situations. For instance, I will learn how I can make tourists comfortable in a different country so much that they feel they are a part of it. The internship will also connect me with the right people in my field who apart from being guides and role models to me will also enrich me with the right people who could potentially become my employers.
May-August
As a short-term goal for my career, for a project will create a handbook detailing the various recipes provided in the hotel. This short handbook of foods, drinks, cocktails, and desserts will help tourists view Japanese Finest resort as a friendly and caring hotel for its visitors. While the book will only outline a few common recipes, it will be prudent to sell them to the tourists as a way to see just how achievable this project is. Making the handbook will require $ 40 which will come from the hotel human resource department as a way of promoting work relationships for interns at the hotel.
Year 4 (2022)
Young Youth Expedition in Japan. In a team of 6 which includes my friends and me, decided that after our internship we would create a local tour guide team to foreigners visiting Japan. While ours will not be a big company per se, starting as a local tour guide team will provide us with rich experiences on how to interact with tourists who visit Japan for business or vacations. Our objective at this point will be to familiarize ourselves with major hotels at Japan and the streets so that we can become reliable local tour guides. Being savvy in Japan streets, buildings and highway will enhance our experience and knowledge about tourist tastes and preferences on the several of hotels found in the country. We will measure the success of this team by recording the number of times a tourist revisits our website for another tour guide. This is a measurable goal as it helps us keep track of how professional and helpful our skills will be to tourists.
Year 5(2023)
After much experience as an employee, I intend to start my corporate dealing in tourism management and hospitality five years later. While at it, I also intend to take cultural competency classes to help me attune myself with the vast cultural orientations of the world. For my cultural competency classes, I will hire a tutor to take me through the vast cultures of the world. Understanding people’s cultures give one a different perspective and ways to appreciate one that it not their own. A potential obstacle in this goal might be the lack of financial resources to enable begin a company. Starting a hotel requires a plan in hiring, construction, advertisement to mention a few, which will call for a significant investment which I might not be ready for especially now that people survive on hard-knock times.
Conclusion
My career goal setting plan aims to achieve all its outlined objective. I hope to become the best in what I do, and with all the skills I have accrued, I hope to become a good role model for my employers in my future company as the CEO. Career goal settings are the perfect instruments for anyone looking for a direction they can orient the future regarding career. With missions and visions entailing core values such as discipline, focus, and integrity, I believe in what I plan to achieve, and I will, therefore, sweat for it wholeheartedly.
