Evolution of Primates

The plesiadapiforms are characterized by small eye sockets on the side of the face with no bony ring that circles the eye. Also, some had claws and lacked nails. Additionally, the plesiadiforms had a wide gap between the anterior teeth. Another type of the primate was the Promisians which were separated into two groups; the adapidae and the omomydae had a lot of similarities in size and type of food they ate. The promisians had large brains, opposable big toe and also they had eyes on the face front, and nails at the finger ends and toes. The difference between the new and old world monkeys led to no competition between the two species.

The two techniques used to determine the geological events of fossils differed in a way that while the chronometric method determined the exact age of fossils, relative dating technique estimated the relative order of series of events. Relative technique follows that top layers are younger than the bottom layers since older layers were laid down first and are covered by successively younger layers. Nevertheless, radiometric relies on the clock-like decay of unstable isotopes of an element to more stable forms. Chronometric dating technic based on using radiometric to measure the exact age of a fossil. Other techniques are carbon 14 dating, Potassium-argon dating, Argon-argon dating and Electron trap techniques.

Primates live in social groups; the main social groups are monogamy and polygyny. The monogamy social group is characterized by a single male and a single female who attaches themselves to each other. The primary duties of the two creatures were to assist in territory defense, protect offspring from marauding males, and assist in parental responsibilities. Another social group is polygyny which consists of one male polygyny and multiple- male polygyny. In one male polygyny, there was a strong female bond whereas in multiple-male polygyny there was competition between male for priority access to females.

Response 4 (Syuzanna)

Understanding human evolution needs one to study sociality since humans are highly social. Furthermore, sociality has many benefits like an enhanced mating success since multiple potential mates are available to primates living in a group. Other benefits are cooperative hunting hence greater access to food. Additionally, also reduced vulnerability to predators offers more vigilance by virtue of group size so an individual could spend less time scanning for danger. For instance, monkeys live in a social group where they relate to each other for them to thrive in a natural environment just like humans. Furthermore, they play games and other spontaneous activities for fun.
