An essay that is reflective is one in which you are free to discuss your opinions on the material you have studied. According to your understanding of the reading material, you provide a reflection. I'll be using Mark Albion's book "Making a Life, Making a Living: Reclaiming your Purpose and passion in Business and in Life" as the basis for my reflection essay for this study.
Albion stresses that following one's passion is the correct thing to do and that the motivation for doing so should be more than just financial. He ties money to making a living and passion to living. By providing explanations, I will provide examples of the philosophies I think were accurate and draw attention to the presumptions I believe he made wrongly by giving explanations as to how I arrive at such decisions (Mark, 2000).
A Life or a Living
Albion in his book talks of students who after college chased big jobs that were paying very well and those who went after the type of employment they had a passion for. Adam argues that passionate people get successful easily in life and are contagious as compared to those who go for the money without minding their tasks (Mark, 2000).
Albion promotes the idea that by doing what you love you get happy at your job and have the desire to do more and more which in the end lands you at success but by doing a task you hate only for the money, you will starve your soul and deprive yourself happiness. Although he is not suggesting that you only stick to the jobs, you have a passion for, but he is surely campaigning for that (Mark, 2000).
Strengths in Albion’s Claims
Follow your Passion and Consult With people you Trust
Albion asserts that by following your passion at whatever you do, you get to breed more happiness and success (Mark, 2000). Albion is right for the fact that by doing what you love, you get to do more of it and produce quality results for the fact that you love doing a particular task. By doing what you are forced to do only to attain money or any other token, you get devastated and rarely perform as expected due to lack of passion in the assigned role.
By being passionate with someone, you also get to build trust with them quickly, and this helps when making decisions. Albion advises people to always consult with the individuals who have proven to be worth our trust in making major decisions that will have large impacts on our daily lives (Mark, 2000).
Albion is right because by consulting people our hearts have chosen to trust maybe after they did the right deeds to us, including them in life decisions helps attain wise and healthy suggestions on whatever dilemma we are in. Going to people who cannot be trusted will result in adverse decisions as they may misguide on purpose.
Weaknesses in Albion’s Claims
Passion before the Money
Albion believes that money cannot give you happiness and suggests that passion should come before the money but I do not agree with him as looking at all the basic needs and luxuries needed to make our lives comfortable and happy, they are all brought by money and not really by passion for what you do. Being passionate in a low paying job will leave you miserable for the rest of your life.
As much as passion brings success closer, it has never paid the bills, and at the same time, the success tied to passion is measured in amounts of bucks you own by the end of the day. For this reason, I argue that money should come before the passion for the fact that it is money which makes our lives easier and fun on earth so go ahead and sign up for any job as long as it pays you well.
Conclusion
I conclude that Albion was right in some of his sentiments and wrong in others like saying passion should be considered first over money. In today’s word, it should always be all about the money as we struggle to cope up with inflation, desires to travel the world and living a comfortable life. Money does make you happy, and I even go a step to assert that it buys you happiness!
