Engaging Refugees in Community Development

The best place that this single mother can go is the work place. This can be done through applying for a job in the local firms.  In most cases, the local workers hold intensive knowledge of the local communities or sub-communities and they can be vital to help her in the engagement. Churches, can also be an important place to assist her in the engagement. For the kids, they can be actively engaged by also attending worship places and local school. Therefore, the local workers, schools and churches play an important role in engaging people like her in this area.

Resources are important for the survival of this single mother and her little kids in this new area. Absence of these resources could make their survival difficult. Financial resources are necessary since they are means to access the basic commodities like food, shelters, and clothing. Without food, the young mother and the kids will die. Without shelter, they will also not survive. The kids will also not attend schools if there is no financial resources. Water is also very important to the survival of the single mother and her two little kids and without it, they will also not survive.

People are marginalized from truly participating in the community programs based on their identity, culture, and gender. If the woman comes from an area with a different culture, she could be marginalized from active participation in the new area’s community development programs.  Similarly, differences in identity could segregate people from true community engagement. Also, women have limited opportunities to access, use resources, and take control of the community projects.  This is because some people still do not appreciate equal rights to access and opportunities for everyone. In brief, women are often stereotyped to be inferior in community decision making activities.


Scenario Two


Question 1


To connect with people from the community and the sub-communities, the refugee should go to local refugee schools and workshops. Normally, these schools and community workshops are developed to welcome the refugees and immigrants into the new country and to give them easy time whilst trying to adapt to the new environment. There are advocacy and support groups that are trained to engage these refugees into the present country. These groups have a lot of information regarding the local communities.  Therefore, they can be very important in integrating this refugee and to help him/her to full engage with other people.

The refugees need a lot of resources for them to survive in the foreign countries. Example include finance, and natural resources like water. Finance is important as it assists the support groups to be able to fully cater for the needs of the refugees. This includes buying of food, and clothing. Without money, the refugees will not survive since they will lack the basic needs. The refugees also needs natural resources like water. Water is an important resource as it controls life. The refugees need water for them to keep surviving. Therefore, absence of these resources will lead to death.

People can be marginalized from community participation based on their identity and undesirable stereotypes. As a refugee, one will get difficult moments in trying to truly contribute to the society because of negative stereotypes.  Also, people regards refugees do not respect them. They are denied the equal rights to access good schools so as to get knowledge and skills required in community development. The refugees are also denied equal opportunities to access and actively use resources, and to take control of the community projects.  In brief, refugees are not normally regarded as part of the community leading to their marginalization.


Scenario three


Question1


For the student to well engage with the new community and the sub-communities within it, he/she can join or attend the social and community events organized by local agents. This events can ranges from small ones attracting like 10 people to large crowds of more than 500 people.  Attending community events is one way of building bridges between the student and that community as they involve the local residents and draw them together. The student will also know how they do their things, what things they like and dislike and even how to actively contribute towards the community’s development projects.

The resources needed in this scenario could be broadly categorized into either human, natural or capital resources. An example of human resources is skill and its absence will slow development. An example of natural resources include water. If water is not available, then people will have to look for alternatives sources such as buying from nearby towns.  People can also move to other towns with plenty of the resources or risk dying.  If goods produced to make others goods, i.e. capital resources are not available, then the economy will not progress. The natural and financial resources are also vital for the student’s survival.


Question 3


Some people are marginalized from actively participating in the local community due to limited access to opportunity to education. These segregated groups may not have the required skills to participate in the community development.  Others are marginalized from true community participation due to their political stand. The local community could be composed of many political parties. The minority groups are often left out when it comes to local participation to development programs.  Others are segregated because of their differences in gender. For instance, many women in the community and the sub-community are denied chances to actively participate in developmental decisions.


Scenario Four


Question 1


For the 55-year old man to engage with the community or the sub-communities within, he could join local programs such as church fellowships, and free sports clubs. The man can also join voluntary programs. In this areas, he will not be expected to pay entry fees. Church fellowships are the best means to meet with people of all status from the local community. This will enable the man to interact and get to know most of them and so is the attending of free sports clubs and voluntary programs. This will also benefit the individual heal wise by actively engaging his mind.


Question 2


The most fundamental resource in this scenario is capital. Money, for instance is very important as it will be used to purchase the basic needed. However, absence of this kind of resource cause health issues to the individual. This involves stress and to worst case scenario, depression. According to Dhabhar and Firdaus, chronic stress can lead to depression and consequently could suppress the person’s protective immune responses and worsen pathological immune responses (193). Absence of water could be dangerous to the man’s health system and the man may die. Therefore, absence of resources could cause detrimental effects to the man’s health.


Question 3


People are be marginalized from truly participating the community due to lack of financial resources, or generally poverty. People without money, or poor people are normally underrepresented in the decision making processes regarding the community’s development. In similar cases, these groups of people are stigmatized due to their inability to contribute financially towards the developmental projects of the community.  When people are old and not financially stable, it becomes difficult for them to be included in the community development projects such as building projects, infrastructural development, among others. The main reason is because of their financial incapacity to make any contributions.
