Theater reflects and influences the society in various ways. One significant way, through which theater reflects the community, is by showing the challenges facing a changing society. Changes can be inevitable from time to time. A society like Reading, where most of the people have been depending on their work for years, may have a difficult time adapting to system's change. The play shows how particular events force people to take different ways. The job cuts and poverty are some of the factors facing society.
Question 2
The earliest development of theatre originated in Athens, where dithyrambs (ancient hymns), were sung to honor Dionysus. The hymns were later reformed for choral processions where partakers dressed in masks and costumes.
In time, certain participants evolved to take certain parts within the procession, although they were not yet complete actors as depicted in today’s world. The evolvement later came in the 6th century, where tyrant Pisistratus created a series of new public festivals.
A festival of entertainment was held to honor Dionysus, and these featured the use of music, poetry, dance and singing. Thespis was created who was the winner of the festival.
As depicted by tradition, in 534 BC, Thespis amazed the viewers by bounding on the back of a cart and reciting poetry. In doing so, Thespis became the first actor, and it is from him, we got the word thespian.

Some of the societal problems, which the people of Pennsylvania face today, include the low wages in the companies and the high number of unemployed people. Racisms and intolerance are also parts of the many problems, which the people of Pennsylvania face. The women face discrimination and the struggle to rise in an oppressive system.

Cynthia's journal entry before the play:
I cannot believe today is the day that I will get to perform for hundreds of people. I am so excited to show my theatre skills and be part of this play. I am nervous about playing the role of Brucie’s wife. I hope that people will love me on stage and I hope to depict the issues that the Reading society face. I cannot wait for the play to start.

Well, I finally played my role in front of hundreds of people. I am so excited and exhausted at the same time. I think that I nailed my part. It went a lot better than I anticipated! Thank God! I feel worn-out. My body feels like it can barely hang on. I feel tired emotionally, mentally and physically.

Today is the day to display my skills,
But what will I do when I am nervous a ton?
I just want it to be the greatest of plays,
But the audience will be there to watch me perform.
Will they be pleased? Will they be sad?
Today will be grand, today will be fine,
So stop all your disquiet and let the play start!
