The Use of Web Application in Information Retrieval

The number of websites and content currently in existence online is unimaginable. To achieve the best results when looking for information, one has to employ the tools and strategies used to find information online. This tools and strategies help one to make an effective and efficient search result.

                During the research, http://catalog.loc.gov, www.google.com, www.scholar.google.com, www.onesearch.library.uwa.edu.au, www.images.google.com

and www.bing.com were used as sources where the information was retried using the search terms that will be indicated later. An In-depth view on catalogs library gives one a variety of information in the form of articles and books this is the same as with ebsco.com where books and materials can be found. The sources as mentioned above are the best when one needs to research on information based on authors of books. Google gives a variety of diversified details based on different topics while scholar. Google focuses on various articles and case laws. However, it was recorded that while the above information deals with content and books Google images only deals with images. These images are searched online, and relevant information about the image is retrieved.

There were different database tools used. Library of Congress catalog was used to retrieve information. The word “web application” was searched on the search options and various articles and books with the word web application was seen.

When freebase database has used the word, “Neymar” was used as an example to check the output. Google database was also used. This database has an extensive database that any information that is searched can be retrieved.

The choice to use this database tools was based on the fact that these tools are easy to use and are not complicated. It does not require prior training or expertise. However, basic computer skills are needed. They have also been made in a situation where the application interface is user-friendly. It has directions, and by only one click one can access the required information at any time within seconds.

The database tools have Superior search relevancy. When screening both search engines with the queries, it returns the final results faster and even more relevant effects. It also gives a variety of pertinent information for one to choose from. This is done within the period of a couple of milliseconds. Moreover, the first top several results give more relevant data.

The type of information needed. When one requires a search for images, then there is a specific database where the required information is stored and can be retrieved. It was used for the retrieval of image information using Google images. When articles and books were needed, google scholar and catalog library were used for the research. In the databases as mentioned earlier: images, raw materials, and articles were retrieved.

Six search terms were used on different platforms which are the online web, Library catalog and online databases using different strategies and tools to maximize the search and make an in-depth conclusion. On the use of Hotel AND Texas as the first search term, using Google and Bing search engines, about 495,000,000 and 48,000,000 results related to hotels in taxes was seen within 0.5 seconds. AND as a Boolean operator was used to specify the location of hotels which was needed and narrow down the search. Cars AND Men is another example where the output result was words related to cars and men only. About 1,220,000,000 results were found on Google. Although when “Cars” AND men were used with the quotation marks, the results reduced to approximately 1,160,000,000.

Online Courses OR Distance Education is another example of a search term used. The Boolean operator OR was used to compare online courses and distance education which has the same meaning. On google search engine all online courses or distance education of about 933,000,000 results was seen in about 0.44 seconds.

” Death row” as used in the example, quotation marks are used only to bring results that are related to death row. The actual results obtained from Google, Bing, and Onesearch brought only about 17,000,000, 2,900,000, 76,895 results respectively associated with death row. When the quotation marks were not used, the search reduced drastically.

Online library catalog listed was used to register online books and articles with the subject containing web development. The online catalog library was opened; then on the browse section the word “subject containing” was clicked to enable the database to only narrow down the search to only subjects that was containing web development. About 77 search results were obtained.

In the above search term examples, boolean operators and quotation mark strategies or tools are proved to be the best and the most effective way to provide the best results across the platforms. They are useful because they provide specific information needed in a variety of ways. One can also save time while researching as the time required while using these operators is less. These strategies or tools when used to search also give just the right information needed as feedback and eliminates the unnecessary information.

No resources or more information was needed on this project to obtain information apart from the available data used online. Students or any other person can utilize these resources as they are a variety of information on them, however; one needs money as a resource to open retrieved some information especially the books on the online databases.
