Nancy Halt is known to be one of the world’s best artists. Her artwork has won several awards. She gained popularity when she built four tunnels which were completed in 1976 known as the sun tunnels. They are simply round tubes made of concrete. Their layout is x-shaped with holes drilled on them giving a constellations pattern known as Columbia Draco, Capricorn, and Perseus. The tunnels are located in a valley in the Great Basin desert. The lighting hitting the tunnels normally give a reflection of the skies which Halt says is bringing the sky to the earth making the work even more appealing.
The sun tunnels do not only act as an astronomical exhibit by offering celestial mechanisms but also provide shelter off the sun in the desert. The difference reflective looks, especially during winter and summer, make the tunnels even more appealing. The tunnels are similar to the Neolithic monument which though sculptures; they have significant scientific value and give the viewer a relationship between him and the environment.
The artist seemed to give an impression of the looks of the skies and the relationship between the astronomical bodies. Her presentation of the work in the desert was to give a clear view of the natural environment without distractions by the physical environment. The piece remains significant up-to-date being an attraction site for those seeking the feel of being at the center of the universe.
The sculpture today has allowed many to learn on perspectives and fun time passage as many travels to the tunnels to identify with Uttah’s heritage. It has been seen as the major landmark in the desert with astronomists using the same in their experiments. It has also encouraged women to participate in artwork drawing inspiration from Halt.
